Anonymous Coward User ID: 31324821 United States 01/11/2013 09:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hard to know how accurate those figures are. I don't doubt the number is higher than it should be but I will give you an example. My husband was unemployed for 6 months and as much as we hated it, we had to go on food stamps for a while. As soon as we filed for food stamps, the kids were placed on a free lunch program at school without our knowledge (later they told us this was automatically done "in the system") so the lunch money we sent everyday was declined. At the time, we were grateful for the unexpected break with three kids in elementary school at once. However, after a few months of being on food stamps, my husband got a great job and we immediately contacted our local government office and requested we be taken off the food stamp program. They did but our children's school refused to take them off the free lunch program. We sent lunch money everyday but the offer of payment was declined. We sent letters that went with no response. Finally, frustrated that they wouldn't take our children off of this program, I went to visit the school personally and this is what I was told..."The schools receive government grant money for the number of children receiving free or reduced lunches so once your child's name is on that list to receive them, the school will refuse to remove their names because it would result in a reduction of the amount of money they receive from the government." This should piss everyone off! Not only are they giving free lunches to children whose parents could well afford to pay but they are taking government money (YOUR money) to supplement for these children who are not in need! Schools are making a racket out of the system and raping the tax payers and the media get their numbers of children on food stamps from the schools which are more than likely skewed (at least in our case). |

For a family of 5, that comes to $1,750.00 a month. As I stated above, we were on food stamps for a few months and they spoil you. Can you imagine trying to spend that much money a month on food when your normal grocery budget is more like $500 a month? Is it any wonder there is abuse of the system and so much obesity in America? As soon as we could, we got off of them and now we encourage others we know on them to use the excess money to stock their pantries. I see a time in the near future when, after they have everyone hooked, they shut the EBT cards off, riots commence and they can declare their much anticipated martial law! It's only a matter of time! |

I don't know where you live or what your income level was, but, here in Wisconsin it is no where near that much. Food stamps are determined by income (obviously) and are pro-rated according to how much income one has (including child support and such). For example, a family of 5 that I know of who do receive child support get around $500 a month. That is also about what I spend a month on myself and my 4 kids, so, that seems a reasonable amount. Eligibility and amounts are determined on a state level. |

Imo. there are tooooo many Rules and real independent creation of Jobs become/ became impossible! Actually, what's hurting job creation are automation, outsourcing, and the concept of the bottom line. The larger a company's profit margin, the higher its stock goes and the more money its executives make. The "smartest" companies are able to hire the fewest and cheapest people and spend the lowest amount of money on labor and benefits. As long as Americans insist on working for a living wage, then companies will outsource, unless they are medical, food service, and other hands-on businesses. If they must hire real people in the US, they will hire the cheapest they can find -- illegals if possible -- and as few as possible. Politicians in DC can talk all they want about job creation. As long as smart businesses can use machines and a few cheap people to do the work, employment will stay low. And sure, minimum wage can go down or be abolished, but unless consumer costs also drop like crazy, we'll simply have a huge class of really poor people competing to become personal servants or worse at slave wages. |

If we didn't have NAFTA and etc, we would still be a manufacturing country, rather than having become a services country. We signed the manufacturing jobs away to China, and now it's expected we give our minimum wage up when they used to pay a living wage to begin with because we didn't pay other countries to make everything and just buy buy buy.
