Check out your local community college to see what 2 year programs you might be interested in that will lead to some kind of career. Of course, you can always join the Navy. They will test you to find out what you are good at, and then they will train you. After that you can go to college on the GI Bill and get the education you need to have a profession. |

What gives? You usually have to know someone to get a job. Forget about the online applications. Contact everyone you know and ask them if they know someone who knows someone. Volunteer at a place where you want a job and work hard. Not sure how accurate this is, but.... [link to www.onlinecolleges.net] They seem to be saying the same thing here... If you have a clean background then they will hire you as the turnover is great in this type of work. Yes, the work is physically hard but in a few months you will be stronger and healther. Get paid to get in shape. Seriously, a loader who I know that was overweight has only been working 3 months and has lost 35 lbs. He told me that he is so glad he didn't quit the first couple of weeks while his body was getting used to this hard physical labour. The pay isn't too bad either. 11.50 hr. starting out and 25 cent raise every 3 months. "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree:" Psalms 92:12 |

I want a job. How many hours do you work a week? Shifts? Days on and off? Time on land vs on water? Pay? Thx. Quoting: Dr. Super Bowl Dave Commercial sailors are paid a day rate. Typically $250 to $300 per day based on a 12 hour day. After that you can retire to your room. This is a starting position. As you acquire experience you can move to other departments. Deck, engine room, or galley. Typically you work 30 days on and get 30 days at home. Every company is different though. Deep sea you might be gone 60 days or more. In the gulf you can work 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. It varies widely. If you are in port and you are not on watch you are free to go into town. But many companies are zero tolerance drug and alcohol so if you come back wasted you'll get fired. There are exceptions though and many crew have been known to have a sip or two before turning in. |
