I had the same problem, the problem is employers have thousands of applicants to choose from, they can wait for someone with 16 years of college to hire just to flip burgers if they want. The military is not a bad option if that is a option for you, its better than nothing, reserve or rugular, they also pay some of your college tuition.

Take a nice long read. Unemployment rate is plenty low all across the oil patch, from Texas up into Saskatchewan.

Good luck to you.

Create your own job. You have the internet. Learn how to make websites. Find a good niche. Every tool you need is at your disposal, usually for free. All you need to buy is a domain and some hosting. I have no "job" since 2001.

Dude,Im almost 42 and finally found my niche. Im a service advisor at a new car delaership. This field will always be here. Maybe get your foot in the door with a detailing job. It may pay 10-12 per hr.Depending on what area. There are several positions also other than just a detailer.Sales,Service,Technician,Detailer,Oil Changer,Lot person, parts driver, accounting, office etc etc.

If you are male or female there is a spot for you. If I were applying for a detailer I would show up with my car waxwd, inside edtailed, engine, door jambs, vents etc all shiny. Even if its not normal, just tell him or her hell yes you have experience:come look at my car,if yuor cars not that nice ask a friend or relative to detail their car and take it to the interview.

This goes to everyone needing a job, think about a car dealership. Male or female,People from all walks of life. I wish I would have thought of it at your age,I'd be set by now.

Let me know what you think,a courier is another easy one to get and is fun learning your area like the back of your hand. With GPS anyone can do that.If you dont know the area study the major highways and name them at the interview and say you have updated GPS anyways ,so the only problem would be findidng the right door to goto,LOL.

Carpet cleaning, its nice learning the area and getting to be in all sorts of homes form $30,000 to $300,000,000.

Re: Can't find a job.
young man, get a job working at UPS or FedEx Ground. If you have a clean background then they will hire you as the turnover is great in this type of work. Yes, the work is physically hard but in a few months you will be stronger and healther. Get paid to get in shape. Seriously, a loader who I know that was overweight has only been working 3 months and has lost 35 lbs. He told me that he is so glad he didn't quit the first couple of weeks while his body was getting used to this hard physical labour. The pay isn't too bad either. 11.50 hr. starting out and 25 cent raise every 3 months.
 Quoting: Tirzah

I heard ups would be great, better than FedEx. At ups put in average of 8 years then your making $25/hr with roughly $4000 retirement. My friend does it. I wish I knew when i was 20.

Re: Can't find a job.
You usually have to know someone to get a job. Forget about the online applications. Contact everyone you know and ask them if they know someone who knows someone. Volunteer at a place where you want a job and work hard.

 Quoting: nutmeg

There is a lot to this poster said. When I was looking for work I filled out tons of applications, applied online for tons of jobs, looked at the listings every day.

But in the end the two jobs I have now I only got through word of mouth, neither job was ever listed anywhere and I never filled out any application for either one.

I got the one job working for a friend and then heard about the other one through that first job.

Since then I heard about another one the same way but I couldn't physically handle a third shift, even these part time shifts take it out of me, it's hard work cleaning big commercial places but I would recommend cleaning work, there's a lot of good things about it.

So yeah, get out there and talk to everyone, it's hard to have a social life when you are broke and down and out but you have to force yourself.

And always put yourself together and dress nice every day and get out of the house and talk to people. When I was out of work I tried to dress like I was going to an interview every day. You never know who you'll run into.

If no record of felonies and a US citizen then try Mil Sealift. It is a good doorway. You are still a civilian.
We are going like Europe. You don't see 18 wheelers all over Europe like here in the US. Soon you will see much fewer here. They don't need them in Europe as they have full sea cabotage. A part of the Jones Act was changed to build roads and sell cars and trucks. It limited most everything to 2 ports, Elizabeth City and Long Beach. If you took something from, say China, into one port and then shipped to another port in the US it would add another 12% onto rate. That is being undone. LaHood, the present Sec. of Transportation, is opening 40.........Forty....., more ports, East, West, Gulf and Great Lakes.
Get in any door that you can on this. You can email me on side for more.
 Quoting: Rinty

This is interesting, I will keep my ears open for more news about this, thanks.

Maybe you've got a bad resume. I write resumes for a living, and I can tell you that a bad resume will ruin the chances of the best candidate more than any other single factor. Invest in the services of a professional resume writer and you'll at least be guaranteeing yourself some interviews.

Beyond that, consider creating work rather than 'finding' it. What are you good at? What are your skills? What do you need to learn? At your age, you should be willing to be doing ANYTHING, from shoveling snow to mowing grass to running errands to cleaning toilets, even babysitting. If you've got a car, deliver pizzas or groceries or offer to help seniors for a 'donation'.

Volunteer where you can network and showcase your skills. Tell everyone that you're looking for work and are willing to do anything legal. Take the lowest grunt job (if that's all you can find) and do it to the best of your ability. It sounds to me like you're being tested. Pass your test with flying colors.

NO-ONE IS OWED A JOB. NO-ONE IS OWED WORK. Earning a daily wage is a privilege, not a right. Make sure that you've earned that privilege by making the best of the gifts and talents God's given you, and always be open to learning new skills.

Attitude is everything.

Oh, and maybe spend less time on the computer, unless you're actually using it towards finding/creating a job. :0)

All the best to you, OP! Maybe check back in another three months and let us know how things are going.

My heart goes out to all you young people in this terrible economy.

I am 71 and back in 'my day' you could get jobs left and right.......at least for me....I did office work for a number of years..was, and still am, I guess! a speed typist......my bosses loved it...I worked for trucking companies in billing and claims depts.,,,,also an office equipment company as admin. assistant.....loved all my jobs.

Today? totally different and fucked up world we're in now.

as someone else on here said, DO try go get a skill that's something you ENJOY......

DON"T go to school for a skill just to make money.....You'll hate getting up every morning and soon will hate yourself.

I also gotbanana2 a cosmetology license and instead of doing hair, which I didn't like, got into makeup and skincare..so in a sense I had two 'careers'.and enjoyed them both.

Now that I'm retired, I can look back on my 'working years' with much pleasure; I didn't make a lot of money all the time, but I had my health and jobs I really enjoyed going to.

I hope you have the same type of working life!!!

But for now, keep on filling out applications; ya just never know when something could come up.

and DO look into a community college or trade school for something you can do that you LOVE.

Best of luck to you!!!!!!!!
