Go to your nearest coast guard station and acquire the two credentials you'll need. An MMC (Merchant Mariner Credential) and a TWIC ( Transportation Workers ID Card). Take a drug test. Get FBI background check. Get job. Takes two weeks. Easy process.

It is easy to get into. Great jobs especially for a single guy.

Call the NMC (national Maritime Center) for any detailed questions. Very helpful people.
Visit your nearest Coast Guard station to obtain your MMC. Fill out the papers. They'll send you for a drug test. Pay them the $120 dollars and you'll receive a credential in the mail that looks like a passport.
Before you go to the CG though you go online to the TWIC website. Just google it. Set up an appointment to obtain your TWIC. Follow their instructions.
1. Acquire the TWIC
2. Acquire your MMC via the Coast Guard.
3. Apply for a job
There are three ways to apply for a job.
1. Go to a union
2. Go to a crew hiring agency
3. Apply directly to the company of your choice via their website
