I'm sorry but playing Call of Duty does not remove a person's conscience and sense of right and wrong. Using videogames as the scapegoat here is no more valid, or productive, than blaming rock music or pot was in previous decades.

I mean, if someone raged out and shot someone, maybe I could see at least looking for an association between violent, intense videogames and that action.

But what these kids was premeditated evil. Finding an easy scapegoat in videogames is lazy, counterproductive, and just plain dumb. I'm sorry, but the universe isn't going to wrap this one up in a neat little bow and have it solved by next friday.

It's a complex issue, if you think there's an easy answer, you're dumb.

What sets off this "Monster" that some people think sets deep inside the mind of a "Gamer"? I'm curious as to why people jump to this conclusion so boldly and with angst. Most will say it hits the nail on the head perfectly. The kid was playing this game a lot, it had blood and gore, the kid acted on those impulses, there ya go answers everything. But I can't take that answer.

Let's take a look at the numbers

The video game industry grossed 17 billion in 2011 but dropped 22% to 13.2 billion this year.

With these figures it's safe to say that gamers are everywhere. But that doesn't create the "Monster" does it? Most peoria who take the side of "Video games had cause in this behavior" will usually say that it is hard core gamers. People who play hours after hours every day. This somehow installs the repetive process of killing, stealing, and causing havoc. The process they call "conditioning".

I have played video games since I was a Wee Lad. Memories of Super Mario 3 and Mike Tyson's Punch-out bring a smile. I have played any game you could through at me. Mayhem, GTA, Mortal Kombat, Call of Duty, Halo, Assassin's Creed, Dr.Mario, even Manhunt, along with the infamous ZOMBIES. But in all that time I've never had a violent outburst. Everytime I heard a news story or read an article about violent behavior amongst our youth, amongst MY generation, it confounded me. I thought " I'm not like that? I'm slow to anger and never physically harm anything". It bothered me so much I had to test it. If I played these games non stop then maybe it really would change me. It was then when I picked up my Xbox controller with the purpose of learning.

I put my self to the test. I played 2 games upwards of +10 hours a day for 2 weeks. Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 2 : Zombies. Every match I played on Xbox live with a lobby full of other people. This allowed me to communicate with hundreds of thousands of other gamers

My Results Follow

-Game Time-
When I first started playing MW3 I realized what I didn't know. After many matches I realized.... I sucked. This did make me angry. Constantly getting killed by a gaming peer 20 times in a row. Worse than that, he made it look easy. Anger did fill me. I am very competitive by nature. But I take a step back and say "Play better". This anger was also filled with moments of adrenaline. My resting heart rate stays at 58-70. During game a match it rose 70-90. When I reached pivotal points in the match I found my heart rate between 90-110, sometimes even a tad above.
After one week of playing, the anger in game was no where near as bad, because now I made the killing look easy. A tremendous rise in reflex and skill. I played 60 game hours the previous week so it's true what they say. Practice makes perfect. During the rest of the four weeks I was only angry when I was killed out of no where. It seemed to give me a "jolt" of fear then anger. In every match I did get a slight dopamine burst when I knew how much better I was then who I was playing against. I developed a feeling of grandness. I suppose it's how Kobey Bryant or Lebron James feel on a court.
My relationships between my family and friends was normal. I never rose my voice or had an outburst. All emotions felt at base level. I noticed no different thoughts or actions.

-Post Game-
In the weeks that followed the hours of game play I returned to life as normal. I did not touch a video game for two weeks to balance out my experiment. I noticed no effects from not playing as well. I had a racing thought of "damn I wanna own some kids on mw3" but let it go and continued on with what I was doing.
Still had no outbursts or evil thoughts, and when presented with violence I turned the other cheek.

-Gamers-
During my time playing I had the chance to talk to thousands of different people from everywhere. The general atmosphere would sometimes be trash talking, sometimes bitching, and sometimes joking. Trash talking of the previous match was close. Bitching of you completely beat the other team down. Joking if everyone is *drunk *high *cool. Sometimes I did run into "lonely" people. I say lonely because they would just talk and talk while no one talked back. Just like they wanted some kind of human interaction. I did get a soft spot in my heart for these few. Some would tell me their life story. Some would tell me of their suicide attempts. I have a book full of stories from many many people now.
