We all know the violent crime stats are misleading because the definitions are very different in each country. The article seems to make out that the US has a much lower overall crime rate than the UK. If that is the case, how is it your prison population is so out of whack? The UK total prison population is 84,000 compared to the US population of 2.2m. That's almost 600 people per 100,000 compared to 140 per 100,000 in the UK. So per capita, you are more than 4 times more likely to go to jail in the US. Your homicide rate (total, not just guns) is 4.8 per 100,000 compared to 1.2 per 100,000 in the UK. Those are simple facts, not misleading stats massaged to suit an agenda. |
