Once upon a time people were too busy and dirt poor for sports. With the advent of the industrial revolution and improving living standards, the poor and the seeds of the middle class decided to take up sport as a hobby, something previously reserved for the rich. Obviously poor people didn't have spare horses to play polo, go hunting or riding, or yachts to sail. Hence the birth of "football". Football was the name for any sport played ON FOOT with A BALL, hence the name football. From the bare bones of factory sponsored teams, universities, and community clubs of "football", rugby, gridiron, and association football were created. That is why different countries call different codes of football the same thing.
It is a common misconception made by other countries that football is named because you play with your feet, but that would be an American naming convention. Baseball played with bases and ball, same with basketball, but football is not named for the ball but a general name for an extremely old type of team sport. After, all how could a sport be named after a ball that wasn't invented until after the game itself was?
Wikipedia has a good section of articles breaking down how and why the different codes were formed and what the differences are.
