Pittsburghers - I need to talk to you asap
Pittsburgh is my home town. I was born and raised in a suburb of the 'burgh but left when i was 18 and haven't gone back except for a short visit every few years or so to see family.

I'm thinking about going back.
I must be out of my mind, but i'm thinking of going back so i can be close to my family.

I'm sure things have changed quite a bit, or maybe they haven't, I dunno.

Anyway, i'm posting this thread in the hopes yins guys will give me the current skinny on the city (more specifically the suburbs) to help me make my decision.

maybe the thread will lay flat. but, posting anyway...

thanks.

I'm originally from Pittsburgh, but live out towards central PA now. I had wanted to move back but the housing market fell apart so I'm sure we wouldn't be able to sell our house now :(

I came back to Pa. after 25 yrs. I live in the south hills. yep the winters are ruff and they don't take care of the roads to good. the traffic is horrendous, oh they are good drivers, they just seem to make up their own rules...LOL
and yes the crime rate has gone up and burbs that were quiet and peaceful are not run down, but other than all that I am so glad to be here. I haven't felt so excepted and at home like this in years

Yeah, I saw that in the news...I also saw something about possibly being rented out to UPMC or something? It's GOTTA be bad if even the Diary Queen left that place. What a shame, because it used to be a really great place to go and spend a few hours as a kid. Wouldn't let MY kids do that now though lol

I'm from Collier Township (outside of Carnegie), I do not live there now, but I go back all the time as my family still lives there. Things over that way have exploded.. houses, malls, stores, and so forth. My mom and many others I know actually jump on the bus to go into work down town, it's much easier than ealing with traffic; there's a "bus only" lane I believe.

My husband and I were going to move back over a year ago and the only reason we did not was the schools. Not that they are bad, but our son has autism and he is at a public school that has an autism only classroom (although he spends most of his day in main stream).

I have family in Cranberry Twp. also, and the same thing up there, more houses and stores. My aunt also rides the bus into work downtown. I really miss living there and will most likely move back at some point, just not now.

Re: Pittsburghers - I need to talk to you asap
My older brothers were born in Pittsburgh, but most of my family lived in Russellton no.1(those from this area know the differance). Some lived in Tarentum, New Kensington, Springdale(sp),etc. Myself and my younger brother were born here in Indiana.
I used to go back there once or twice a year, to see my relatives. It will be 18 years this summer that I have been there.I miss going to my Grandpa's farm, which was surrounded on both sides by Little Deer Creek. You had to cross a little wooden bridge to get to his cropland.
I remember when my family didn't have indoor plumbing. We had to go use the outhouse, and dodge the wasps in the summer.I remember when my one Aunt converted her back porch into a bathroom. It was a neighborhood sensation ! I remember when the roads were dirt or gravel. As kids, me and my cousins used to walk down to the end of the gravel road by my one Aunts house, and climb up the hill to go pick berries.
My late Dad used to swim in the Allegany. His ashes were scattered in that river, at his request.
My late paternal Grandfather built many of the Altars and Communion rails in some of the old Catholic Churches in Pittsburg. I wonder if anything he crafted still exists. The wooden Catholic Church in Russellton, which my maternal Grandfather helped to build over a hundred years ago, burned down a few years ago.
I got deep roots in the Pittsburgh area, and hope to go back one of these days.

When I was 22 years old, I moved from Pittsburgh to Manhattan. I went into a deli and asked for a pound of jumbo.

The guy behind the counter said, "Jumbo what?"

He said, "Listen lady...I have jumbo shrimp, jumbo dill pickles...whadda ya want?"

Again, I said, "A pound of jumbo."

And I left the store. I had no idea it was called bologna (baloney as we pronounced it) outside of Pittsburgh!

The way things are shaping up in this country, I don't think moving near any big city is wise. Check crime stats, ect. before any move is wise. There are too many smaller cities and towns that would be a better choice.

Collier Twp. and Rennerdale area are very nice.. the only downfall is that they are in Alleghney County and the taxes are crazy. You are close to the city, but far enough away that you can have a house with a good sized yard and such. Oakdale/Imperial area is nice too. I know all of those areas very well, if you have a few houses in mind, let me know where they are chances are I know exactly where the house is (my family has been in the same house for a few generations) and may even know who has lived in it and I will be happy to give you my input.
