Re: Pittsburghers - I need to talk to you asap
I'm from Collier Township (outside of Carnegie), I do not live there now, but I go back all the time as my family still lives there. Things over that way have exploded.. houses, malls, stores, and so forth. My mom and many others I know actually jump on the bus to go into work down town, it's much easier than ealing with traffic; there's a "bus only" lane I believe.

My husband and I were going to move back over a year ago and the only reason we did not was the schools. Not that they are bad, but our son has autism and he is at a public school that has an autism only classroom (although he spends most of his day in main stream).

I have family in Cranberry Twp. also, and the same thing up there, more houses and stores. My aunt also rides the bus into work downtown. I really miss living there and will most likely move back at some point, just not now.

that area sounds nice. saw a couple nice homes there.
not familiar with cranberry tho.

i just dont want to be in bad area, and things have changed so much not sure where its bad at now

Collier Twp. and Rennerdale area are very nice.. the only downfall is that they are in Alleghney County and the taxes are crazy. You are close to the city, but far enough away that you can have a house with a good sized yard and such. Oakdale/Imperial area is nice too. I know all of those areas very well, if you have a few houses in mind, let me know where they are chances are I know exactly where the house is (my family has been in the same house for a few generations) and may even know who has lived in it and I will be happy to give you my input.

when i was a kid, i lived in the nice part of penn hills. i wouldn't mind going back there, but i hear that it isn't nice or safe there anymore. kinda makes me sad.

Oh and Rennerdale/Collier area, people still know one another and look out for each other. Everybody is very friendly and pretty easy going. Many of my friends parents still live in the same houses as they were in when we were growing up (I'm 34). I can drive around in several areas and at least give the last name of the people of own the house.

Never be afraid of change but remember that not only have your friends and family changed but you have as well. Hold on to your memories and share them with friends and family until they realize "you're one of them". May take awhile but some things are worth waiting for.

Keep the Faith. hf

The way things are shaping up in this country, I don't think moving near any big city is wise. Check crime stats, ect. before any move is wise. There are too many smaller cities and towns that would be a better choice.

Re: Pittsburghers - I need to talk to you asap
Pittsburgh is my home town. I was born and raised in a suburb of the 'burgh but left when i was 18 and haven't gone back except for a short visit every few years or so to see family.

I'm thinking about going back.
I must be out of my mind, but i'm thinking of going back so i can be close to my family.

I'm sure things have changed quite a bit, or maybe they haven't, I dunno.

Anyway, i'm posting this thread in the hopes yins guys will give me the current skinny on the city (more specifically the suburbs) to help me make my decision.

maybe the thread will lay flat. but, posting anyway...

thanks.
 Quoting: Salt

I came back to Pa. after 25 yrs. I live in the south hills. yep the winters are ruff and they don't take care of the roads to good. the traffic is horrendous, oh they are good drivers, they just seem to make up their own rules...LOL
and yes the crime rate has gone up
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27068852

TRUe. Stay away from the south hills if you can. I still have a house there I rent out but gradually getting worse in Baldwin, Brentwood, Whitehall. As for school, Baldwin took in a Boznian immigration, things were so bad they opened a police station in South Baldwin. Then it still got so out of hand even the police closed down over there and now only police in North Baldwin.

You wouldn't recognize Carrick anymore. and Southside is ALL bars

north suburbs are booming, especially Cranberry. There is work there (actually that's Butler County....lots of businesses moved out of Allegheny county because they kept getting taxed so much) and they are building more and more big corporations there. So job search should be good there.

The west, as far as the airport area is not bad, but not sure if there is any growth there.

East, around Monroeville is still the same, still a hell of a traffic mess to Oakland and downtown.

Home prices are pretty steady. Anyone can find a nice home. It's the mortgage that might be hard to get.
Century 3 mall used to be great, I worked there while in high school. I heard it's ghost town now and gangs hang out there, is that true?

Re: Pittsburghers - I need to talk to you asap
I left home (Pittsburgh) approx 5 years ago. I won't go back. In WV now. My fam is still there. Mother visits every now and then and brings me Gyros (WV wouldn't know what a Gyro is if you smacked them in the face with one). Gyros are about the only thing I miss about Pittsburgh now. I used to miss Primanti's sammiches, but I learned to make my own.

Century III mall had been dead for over a decade. When I still lived there it was basically old people using it for their daily walking routines.

I still love my Steelers (apparently WV does as well).

Oh and worst of all...They ruined Kennywood when they sold it to a corporation. Proof...The Old Mill is now Garfield's Nightmare.

A visit now and then isn't too bad, but I'll never live back home again.

I moved to Ohio 36 years ago. From 20 mi. south of downtown Pgh. I will NEVER go back. Don't even like to visit. Horrible roads, no easy way to get anywhere, dirty, dingy, economically depressed, etc. I never lost my accent altogether(still slightly detected if you know what you're hearing) and even passed it on to my kids. I get agita just thinking about moving back. Don't miss anything. Sorry.

I won't even drive through Penn Hills if it's between where I am and where I need to go.

I grew up in the Pittsburgh area, moved away for a number of years, and moved back to the area a few years ago. What I've found is that Pittsburgh, hands-down, has the nicest people in the entire country. The unfortunate flip-side is that it seems to have the dumbest as well.

Just remember, when the world comes to an end, this is the place to be--it'll take anouther 10-15 years to get here.
