I Grew up in wexford, never got the accent. Moved when i was 19. I miss it too, but it seems to be at least a small hub of crazy police activity anytime i see it on the news.

Re: Pittsburghers - I need to talk to you asap
I'm from Collier Township (outside of Carnegie), I do not live there now, but I go back all the time as my family still lives there. Things over that way have exploded.. houses, malls, stores, and so forth. My mom and many others I know actually jump on the bus to go into work down town, it's much easier than ealing with traffic; there's a "bus only" lane I believe.

My husband and I were going to move back over a year ago and the only reason we did not was the schools. Not that they are bad, but our son has autism and he is at a public school that has an autism only classroom (although he spends most of his day in main stream).

I have family in Cranberry Twp. also, and the same thing up there, more houses and stores. My aunt also rides the bus into work downtown. I really miss living there and will most likely move back at some point, just not now.
 Quoting: novamom

that area sounds nice. saw a couple nice homes there.
not familiar with cranberry tho.

i just dont want to be in bad area, and things have changed so much not sure where its bad at now
 Quoting: Salt

Collier Twp. and Rennerdale area are very nice.. the only downfall is that they are in Alleghney County and the taxes are crazy. You are close to the city, but far enough away that you can have a house with a good sized yard and such. Oakdale/Imperial area is nice too. I know all of those areas very well, if you have a few houses in mind, let me know where they are chances are I know exactly where the house is (my family has been in the same house for a few generations) and may even know who has lived in it and I will be happy to give you my input.
 Quoting: novamom

when i was a kid, i lived in the nice part of penn hills. i wouldn't mind going back there, but i hear that it isn't nice or safe there anymore. kinda makes me sad.
 Quoting: Salt

Penn Hills is not so nice anymore.. It hasn't been for a while, even before I moved out of PA over 10 years ago. There's still a few nice places in Shaler/Allison Park, my moms side lives over there, but it's very crowded. Mc Knight road isn't what it used to be either.

Much of the drug trafficking from Homewood has spilled over into the area, as well as the peripheral crime that goes with it. It's not the same place it was 25 years ago.

Also of note is the sad fact that the original Vincent's Pizza on Ardmore Blvd closed last year.

If there's a game the Squirrel hill tunnel will still be backed up in the middle of the freaken night... Also watch out for falling concrete from all of the dilapidated bridges. There best fix is putting a net under them.

i left pgh in 1985

i have lived in Penn Hills, Monroeville, Plum, Wilkinsburg (but that was 40 years ago), Shadyside, Indiana and Creekside.

Graduated HS in Monroeville.

Couldn't believe what happened to Wilkinsburgh when i went back to visit ten years ago. total slum ghetto. it was actually fairly nice when i lived there, but of course i was a kid and that was a long long time ago...

Sounds a bit like my story a few years back...

I moved to WV...still close though...about 45 minutes from the Fort Pitt tunnel.

And yes...Kennywood aint the same as I remember it being as kid...

I'll always consider Pittsburgh my second home though.

Still have lots of friends and family living in and around there.

I think of Friendship like another Morningside, Highland Park, and Lawrenceville. MUCH too close to the city if you're looking for a relatively safe place.

In general, if you can drive to a ball game in 30 minutes or less, you're probably too close to the city.

There's been a huge move to get rid of some of the ghettos and build up the old gang zones into entertainment/business havens. They built an 'upscale' complex in Homestead, of all places! Now, Homestead is still a complete dung heap, but many of the displaced ne'er-do-wells ended up infested (and infecting) previously decent nearby areas, dragging them down to deplorable condition.

Pittsburgh has changed a lot over the past 10 years, it's not the same as it was when I was a child, but I would expect that time changes many things. I know I have talked about how great of an area it is in Collier, it has also began to see changes the past few years. Big housing companies are buying up land and building developments. My mom is fortunate to have a good bit of land, but the old guy at the other end of her property sold his and now there's houses there. It used to be all woods; we would play in there for hours as children. The township even took a part of my moms property/driveway and made it into an access road for the new housing complex. She fought tooth and nail, but lost. The houses are a pretty good distance away and down over the hill so they do not really notice anything, other than the occasional walker her house is at the very top of what used to be a dead end street, it's a little difficult to explain the layout. but she still has a lot of land, there just happens to be a bunch of new houses on the backside and bottom of the hill now, that you cannot even see from her house, you have to walk to the end of the driveway to see them.
I think Pittsburgh has changed so much because all the older folks are passing on. I can really see the difference in Carnegie. It was a nice little toen when I was little, but now, you do whatever you can to try an avoid most parts of it. My sister can really tell you, she's been a police officer there for a long time. The good church going old floks are slowing passing away and nothing but trash is moving in. We used to joke that Carnegie was nothing but churches and bars.. now it seems many of those churches are closing up shop, shit.. one's now even a bar :( So sad.

When I was 22 years old, I moved from Pittsburgh to Manhattan. I went into a deli and asked for a pound of jumbo.

I said, "A pound of jumbo."

Again, I said, "A pound of jumbo."

TRUe. Stay away from the south hills if you can. I still have a house there I rent out but gradually getting worse in Baldwin, Brentwood, Whitehall. As for school, Baldwin took in a Boznian immigration, things were so bad they opened a police station in South Baldwin. Then it still got so out of hand even the police closed down over there and now only police in North Baldwin.

You wouldn't recognize Carrick anymore. and Southside is ALL bars

north suburbs are booming, especially Cranberry. There is work there (actually that's Butler County....lots of businesses moved out of Allegheny county because they kept getting taxed so much) and they are building more and more big corporations there. So job search should be good there.

The west, as far as the airport area is not bad, but not sure if there is any growth there.

East, around Monroeville is still the same, still a hell of a traffic mess to Oakland and downtown.

Home prices are pretty steady. Anyone can find a nice home. It's the mortgage that might be hard to get.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25672410

Not all of the south hills is bad, but you're right...parts are definitely changing for the worse.

I left home (Pittsburgh) approx 5 years ago. I won't go back. In WV now. My fam is still there. Mother visits every now and then and brings me Gyros (WV wouldn't know what a Gyro is if you smacked them in the face with one). Gyros are about the only thing I miss about Pittsburgh now. I used to miss Primanti's sammiches, but I learned to make my own.

Century III mall had been dead for over a decade. When I still lived there it was basically old people using it for their daily walking routines.

I still love my Steelers (apparently WV does as well).
