EPA to Outlaw Many Wood Burning Stoves | |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 21778193 United States 01/12/2013 04:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | • No outdoor fires are allowed. This includes recreational fires such as bonfires, campfires and the use of fire pits and chimineas. • Burn ban violations are subject to a $1,000 penalty. It is permissible to use natural gas, propane, pellet and EPA-certified wood stoves or inserts during a Stage 1 burn ban. The state Department of Health recommends that people who are sensitive to air pollution limit time spent outdoors, especially when exercising. Air pollution can trigger asthma attacks, cause difficulty breathing, and make lung and heart problems worse. Air pollution is considered to be especially harmful to people with lung and heart problems, people with diabetes, children, and older adults over age 65. |

The high today will be -39 degrees below zero. The weather services all project lots more double-digit minus numbers in the coming days and weeks, with dips into the minus 50s and 60s. Heating oil prices are killing your family budget, so you crank up the wood stove and start burning some of the firewood you collected last summer. Uh-oh! Now you’re in trouble! "The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency has issued a Stage 1 burn ban in Pierce County prohibiting the use of fireplaces and uncertified wood stoves until further notice. The burn ban takes effect at 1 p.m. Saturday. "Agency forecasters expect the current high-pressure weather system to continue through Sunday night and with it the cold and still weather conditions we’ve been seeing," the agency said in a prepared statement. "That, coupled with weather inversions in the evening, will likely result in air pollution becoming trapped near ground level." " |

I'm sure they and their children would be pleased if their neighbors refused to give up burning wood for 24 hours. My mother was home-bound on Oxygen during her last few years. If I were in that position, those neighbors would deeply regret their selfishness. |
