EPA to Outlaw Many Wood Burning Stoves
SEATTLE - The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency has issued a Stage 1 burn ban in Pierce County prohibiting the use of fireplaces and uncertified wood stoves until further notice.

The burn ban takes effect at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"Agency forecasters expect the current high-pressure weather system to continue through Sunday night and with it the cold and still weather conditions we’ve been seeing," the agency said in a prepared statement. "That, coupled with weather inversions in the evening, will likely result in air pollution becoming trapped near ground level."

The purpose of the burn ban is to reduce the amount of pollution from excessive wood smoke. The Clean Air Agency will continue to closely monitor the situation.

During the burn ban:

• No burning is allowed in fireplaces or uncertified wood stoves. Residents should rely instead on their home’s other, cleaner source of heat (such as their furnace or electric baseboard heaters) for a few days until air quality improves, the public health risk diminishes and the ban is canceled. The only exception is if a wood stove is a home’s only adequate source of heat.

• No outdoor fires are allowed. This includes recreational fires such as bonfires, campfires and the use of fire pits and chimineas.

• Burn ban violations are subject to a $1,000 penalty.

It is permissible to use natural gas, propane, pellet and EPA-certified wood stoves or inserts during a Stage 1 burn ban.

The state Department of Health recommends that people who are sensitive to air pollution limit time spent outdoors, especially when exercising. Air pollution can trigger asthma attacks, cause difficulty breathing, and make lung and heart problems worse.

Air pollution is considered to be especially harmful to people with lung and heart problems, people with diabetes, children, and older adults over age 65.

Just Freeze! EPA Says Burning Wood Is Bad, but so Is Natural Gas, Coal, Oil

So, you’re living in Fairbanks, Alaska, and it’s 45 degrees below zero, Fahrenheit. The high today will be -39 degrees below zero. The weather services all project lots more double-digit minus numbers in the coming days and weeks, with dips into the minus 50s and 60s. Heating oil prices are killing your family budget, so you crank up the wood stove and start burning some of the firewood you collected last summer. Uh-oh! Now you’re in trouble!

Our electric bill was over $270 and we have no heat or AC. We even put in a solar water heater. A loaf of bread and gallon of milk are over $5. And I'm one of those people who remembered when gas used to be 27 cents. I honestly don't know how most people survive financially these days on their own.
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

What the fuck is wrong with this thread?!

Am I the only one who read the OP?

Wood burning is banned during this high pressure weather event... High pressure holds air close to the ground, smoke doesn't dissipate normally...

Sheesh people, read the fucking text!

chuckle

Funny thing, nobody will read this response on this thread, so the stupidity will go on and on for pages.

And just how "clean" is that power plant that would be taking up the slack for the additional load crated by the electric furnaces?

And, sadly, yet another thread that openly defines the opposites ends of the divide in this country -

On one end: those who do for and take care of themselves

On the other: obviously the government knows what's best for you.

Maybe in all of the infinite wisdom they will get the volcanoes capped while they're at it.

Any home-bound elderly people on oxygen in the area?

I'm sure they and their children would be pleased if their neighbors refused to give up burning wood for 24 hours.

My mother was home-bound on Oxygen during her last few years.
If I were in that position, those neighbors would deeply regret their selfishness.
