I've watched & re-watched every one of his videos for years to trying to figure how these things are possible.

Not trying to say I could do it, but essentially what you're seeing is he's using the back wheel like a spring. (a spring with a very thick, very grippy shoe on it <-the thick, knobby back tire)

Watch the 2009 one again, the barely existent, (barely usable) bike seat is set as low as it can go, practically on the rear tire to serve mainly as an end-cap for the frame.

Most of his long drops, his bum hits the soft thick back tire (more spring).

Observe the contact & compression pattern of his landings:

He distributes the shock of landing impact by connecting with the ground, always in this order:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5

1). Rear wheel
2). Front wheel

Shock absorption pivot points:

3). Knees
4). Ankles
5). Bum to the rear tire

It's just amazing! A magic trick that never gets old!

I hope he lives a long life. He's contributed so much to our understanding of just how far one can go with a bike.

And if you turn up the volume you can hear the chirp of his repeated application of his massive disk brakes.

He's not using these to decelerate, but to optimize his balance and to stop the wheel dead to use the tire's grip like a foot.

None of these feats would be possible without the stopping power or precisdion of those disks!

Once again: not trying to discount his abilities. In fact I stand in awe of them!

They are the anomalies, focused, the gifted, "the naturals", the ground-breakers. They take talents that are already hard or impossible for "the average" & take them to a level that are viewed as impossible even for "the pros".
