Not trying to say I could do it, but essentially what you're seeing is he's using the back wheel like a spring. (a spring with a very thick, very grippy shoe on it <-the thick, knobby back tire) Watch the 2009 one again, the barely existent, (barely usable) bike seat is set as low as it can go, practically on the rear tire to serve mainly as an end-cap for the frame. Most of his long drops, his bum hits the soft thick back tire (more spring). If you've ever seen him with his shirt off, he's built like Bruce Lee. All skin and muscle. Zero fat. He is an athlete's athlete. Conditioned by years, perfectly for this one feat: leaping, while pulling a light-weight bicycle into the air with him, to be used as a landing gear when he returns to the earth. Matched with the balance of a tightrope walker. |

Yes ive watched it from a physiological and mechanical perspective and i wondered (this is a long shot) does he use spin/back flip/in his continuous moves to cushion the dead fall?for example im sure as hell it would hurt if he just dropped like a lead baloon from a container or 1 st storey or bridge, but he seems to 'tumble' if thats the right descriptor like as in breaking a fall in judo or acrobatic break he rolls into it so that the landing is just momentum within the whole move rather than a dead stop/ DUNOOO JUST HAZARDING A GUESS |

He's not using these to decelerate, but to optimize his balance and to stop the wheel dead to use the tire's grip like a foot. None of these feats would be possible without the stopping power or precisdion of those disks! Once again: not trying to discount his abilities. In fact I stand in awe of them! |
