Legislation is still quite loose regards what is beneath the ground, beneath the waves off the Antarctic. Slant drilling would get around current legislation.

The removal of nuclear reactors from Antarctica in the late seventies, which I seriosly question, does not include the nuclear ice breakers the Ruskies currently employ, which are also used in the Arctic as power platforms.

Raytheon now 'powns' all of the US assets down there, and their kind of tech' needs big power. The two million litres of oil/gas they already use in the US zone per year doesnt cover it.

So, getting back to the point of this thread, yes, this is less about general oil areas (refuse to say reserves, as they havent been created yet) and more about Antarctic placement and a very specific oil found in that region.

Hi OP, make sure you include Chile in this talk as well.

Last month the UK showed off its territorial map and claim on Antarctica, which completely goes over the top of both Argentina's AND Chile's claim.

A few of us have said it prior, but this stake on the Falklands is about Antarctica, not just oil.

Territorial waters are key, and if the legally own the Falklands, then the two territorial zones over lap, making a stronger case for the Antarctic claim.

I've toured HMS Belfast, and it's 6 inch main guns that have a range of 25 miles could do much even in her prime! As for the Cutty Sark, I'm not sure that she was ever an HMS, even so I don't think our troops need that much tea! Also that dry dock is now surrounded by a sea of glass and a cafe, so she's going nowhere soon!

I thing the escalation of the Malvinas ownership, I think it's yet another reflection of Argentinians becoming restless, an another distraction from the collapsing economic system.

All the major NATO countries have fewer forces than in 1982. That's because the world was still in the grips of the Cold War between the USSR and NATO. A significant part of the UK's military in 1982 was in readiness in case of a Soviet attack on the West.

The UK's military presence on the Falklands is far stronger now than it was in 1982, and I think it is very unlikely Argentina would attack despite the antics of the Arentinian Government over the past few months.

In 1982 Argentina had a military junta running the country. Only once in history have 2 democracies gone to war with each other - and that was between the UK and Finland in 1941. No actual conflict took place since the UK declared war on Finland only because that was the price Soviet Russia insisted on for a military alliance; the UK had no intention of actually attacking Finland.
