My family and I live on a sailboat and constantly move around. To date we have sailed Florida, East Coast, Bahamas, and the Caribbean to the Virgin Islands.

We have yet to head west. We have you g kids so Mexico has seemed daunting with their high kidnapping rate. But we are still looking at that area of the Gulf.

I was wondering if anyone had visited or was familiar with the Islands of Panama. Like Boca Del Toro, or the Pacific side of Costa Rica.

No doubt it's a beautiful, very friendly country. Very provincial and humble if you stay out of the capitol.

i would imagine it got very Americanized, while we were there building the canal.

The peanutman gave the canal to China, so it must be more than very interesting now.

If i were you i would go there CAREFULLY, but definitely GO THERE !

Actually, however, i think i would leave the children home with grandmama.

Do not go to Panama.

We have had military people stationed there for so long there is an underlying hatred by the locals - who can be very hostile at times.

Have you considered the West Indies?

I know it is a long way, but such a beautiful and peaceful area. Your money would go a long way and the locals don't frown on visitors. I've thoroughly enjoyed every visit.

only in Panama city and that is not somewhere to hang out anyway, The Pacific side of Panama is the best, except for Bocas Del Toro which is incredible and friendly and everything you would want. Lots of expats, boats, treehouses and communities. highly recommended.

My brother is in Costa Rica right now - says 'be prepared for US prices'. Nicaragua and Guatemala are better nowadays from what I can gather. Volcano Brewing Company in CR looks like a great place to hang out judging by their Facebook page.

Well I am from Costa Rica in case you still need some assitance, its pretty nice down here...friendly people and no way close to US prices.

If you are going to the pacific I will recommend you to go to Guanacaste instead of Puntarenas, the beaches are better there and its further away from the capital.

No, we dont have HUGE spiders, lol.

Don't go to any other Central America country, they have gangs and the crime rate is very high outside of Costa Rica. Just a friendly advise.

I don't like Malaria much so Panama is out!

The no.1 killer of people working on the canal was Malaria.

Re: Anybody here from Panama or Costa Rica or vacationed there? Thinking of relocating for a few years.
I'm from both places and you guys are tripping.

Panama has no diplomatic relations with China. China has nothing to do with the canal.

Malaria existed in the 19th century when the canal was being built in the middle of the goddamn wet jungle, you won't catch it from going to Panama in 2013.

Despite the US previous(and evil) involvement in Panama, the ppl hold no disdain for americans whatsoever, and thousands of americans live throughout Panama. Panama City is a global city and a hub for commerce, tourism, services, trading, etc.. Americans are treated better than in any other latin country and you have a bigger chance of encountering ppl who speak english.

A) Prices are as high as, if not higher than, U.S. if you want the same standards of living. If you want to live like a poor Costa Rican then yeah, it can be done on 1k a month or less. Be ready for rugged conditions though, and I hope you like taking the bus. Also, speak Spanish at the least. Ticos are known for their xenophobia and your half-assed attempts at Spanish won't help.

B) Yes there are huge spiders, give me a break. I used to live in the jungles of Guanacaste with my Tico husband and there were Huntsman spiders living in our storage shed, and they are massive.

C) You don't know what you are talking about. There are lots of gangs in CR and bandits armed with Ak-47s who will take everything you own and then some. The only halfway safe country is Nicaragua because they are a police state. If you decide to go there though, be prepared for extreme poverty on par with Africa.

Good luck finding the police in CR lol. There are people that have died of everything from gunshot wounds to shark bites because an ambulance decided to show up an hour later or not at all.

Seriously exaggerating the fuck out of everything.

About C, I could say the same thing abt the US, it doesn't mean it's gonna happen, I can safely say the great majority of costa ricans havent had encounters with "bandits armed with AK-47s", I've lived in San Jose downtown itself.. regardless, CR is a very, very rough country to live in.. the greatest thing about it is definitely its stability, political and press freedom, education and health indexes, and the overall identity of the ppl which is pretty educated and down-to-earth, there's no local conflicts and no military. Goverment is too big but too poor, infrastructure is awful, public services beyond the basic ones like water/electricity are pretty awful, everything is utterly under-funded and under-developed in comparison to a first world country, if you can live without those things then it's not a bad place to live.

Well I guess your 3 years living in CR beat my 32 years living here... Gangs and AK47s? Haha, name a Costa Rican gang, just 1.

You may want to take a look at this:

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Costa Rica 474
El Salvador 4,308
Guatemala 5,681
Honduras 7,104
Panama 759

And of course the safest country according to you Nicaragua:

Nicaragua 785

You may also wonder why we have a huge migration from Nicaragua to Costa Rica...

"Ticos are known for their xenophobia" really? where? because our main source of income is tourism. I am sorry that you had a bad experience here but please do not give us a bad rep with this "facts" of yours because that only make you look ignorant and worst, with a big grade of xenophia for the Costa Rican people.

"extreme poverty on par with Africa." wow... nevermind, you are really ignorant. Bye.
