We are powerless to make our hearts good.

We need a new nature.

Pretend we are a sour lemon tree, and we don't want to be sour anymore, but that's all we can produce is sour lemons.

But we can try to change the fruit by pulling off all the sour lemons and replacing them with sweet, juicy oranges.

Now, when everyone looks at us, they see an "orange" tree--but in reality all we are is a lemon tree with soon-to-be dead oranges on it. We haven't changed the nature of the tree.

We are as powerless to make our hearts good as we are to make a lemon tree into an orange tree.

God's Word says, "If any man be in Christ he IS a new creation."
