A surprisingly strong snowstorm, driven by gale-force winds, covered the Tokyo metropolitan area Monday, closing non-essential functions at U.S. military bases in the Kanto region. Navy weather officials were forecasting about six inches of snow at the Negishi housing area in Yokohama, and two to four inches between Ikego and Yokosuka Naval Base, about 40 miles south of central Tokyo. Wind gusts up to 57 mph were reported at Yokosuka, with sustained winds reaching 43 mph as of 3 p.m., according to Yokosuka weather officials. Commands at Yokota Air Base, Camp Zama, Naval Air Facility Atsugi and Yokosuka began releasing employees around midday. Schools at the bases closed between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. Traffic and trains were delayed several hours in some cases across the region Monday, which was a national holiday. Most bases said they expected to resume operations Tuesday, although with some delays to services. The Japan Meteorological Agency was expecting some of the heaviest snowfall in western Kanagawa Prefecture, which is closer to both Atsugi and Camp Zama. The JMA expected the snow to stop by Monday evening, followed by clear skies Tuesday. However, a JMA official told Stars and Stripes that roads might remain icy during Tuesday’s commute.

A 71-year-old man in Shiojiri city, Nagano prefecture, died after falling into an open drain as he cleared snow around his house, a fire service spokesman said.

National broadcaster NHK said at least 891 injuries had been recorded in Tokyo and the area around it, many of them elderly people who had slipped on snow-covered streets or motorists involved in accidents. Major train services resumed operations in Tokyo, although many sections of road remained closed while crews cleared frozen snow. All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines canceled a combined total of 37 domestic flights while dozens of other flights experienced delays. International operations were not severely affected by the snow, the airlines said. On Monday, Japanese airlines canceled more than 460 domestic flights, mainly to or from Tokyo's Haneda airport, where runways were temporarily closed as workers removed snow. We got 2 inches of snow when there was a forecast, even through the event, of "partly cloudy" yesterday.

It's just getting nuts. Can't even believe the weather "forecast" in present time.

Saw something this week I've never seen before. It was snowing lightly a few days ago even when there was blue sky above and no clouds except viewable on the horizon. This went on for a couple of hours. The snow was small flakes and didn't amount to much, but watching it come down like that was amazing.

As it was in daylight, it must have been some sort of evaporation that would normally appear as fog, which is common in snowy winter weather here, but the droplets were too big to stay suspended, so it snowed for hours just like that, with no clouds.

If you´re neither prepared or used to it, Mother Hulda can be quite surprising with ice and snow shaking her Pillows out with jiggling Gazongas at the Window, just take a look at Turkey etc. ,with no required equipment available, it can get very uncomfortable.
