I remember seeing statistics that .45 and .357 rounds have the highest instance of 1 shot dropping the target. Around 80% for each IIRC.
The argument in favor of higher caliber/weight/propulsion ammo is that presuming it doesn't overpenetrate, it dumps a large amount of inertia into the target. This is obviously in addition to the physiological and psychological component of being shot.
