Only the Kens Burns documentary is as balanced as we all would hope. Its poignant and thoughtful

Nearly all the other documentaries I have seen are variations of the usual propaganda, just parroting the shallow one line excuses for slaughtering 600,000 of our own citizens

I watched it when it first came out, pure Yankee propaganda.

Thank you for pointing out that some documentaries have bias. In fact, all documentaries were made because the director had a passion. Some are naturally passionate about history, while other will impose their artistic license into the project and naturally be more supportive of one side or the other.

That's the difference between Art and History. The worst offenders create propaganda. The best directors take a risk to discover Truth.

I'll watch all of it, and that's a tall order, but even if I do that and see propaganda, then that alone has value as a amateur historican and as an intellectual.

Learning about propaganda, one then can challenge the critical thinking of an argument, and hence opposite, challenge it, or reexamine one's own assertions and conclusions.

I maintain a neutral stance on the Civil War for both sides committed atrocities and injustice, while also displaying courage, fortititude, and the nobility of honour.

Do watch IT , Its Long and worth it I have seen it many many times, and spite the Idea Licoln being One of the Greatest presidents being said many times I will argue that (which can only be met for the 14th amendment) Just watch it

Lincoln is admirable in some ways. He also clearly broke the Constitution at a difficult time in which he was attempting to preserve the Union. He was wildly popular within those who didn't secede but conversely loathed by those who seceded.

In many ways, if an intellectual looked at the polarization today in American politics, the issues of the Civil War and the political leanings of those within that era, they are still being played out today. The study of the Civil is eminently valuable as a result.

The average person, whether American or not, doesn't understand history because they don't bother to read history. They think that the Civil War was largely about slavery. As such, their lack of understanding immediately causes them to feel revulsion whenever the Civil War is discussed or the Confederacy of the USA.

That can be amusing in the South, for many African-Americans might actually laugh and have Confederate flags, especially if they know history.

The major issues were States Rights (See Thomas Jefferson) and the Tariff.

Watch the movie or read the book, COLD MOUNTAIN.

That's a damn fine film, and the book was at one time so praiseworthy that one major university of very high intellectual standing (I won't say which, but it's been called the Oxford of the South), made all incoming students read it one summer.

I am proud of it, too. Cold Mountain is a one hour ride from me.

I agree. The movie is a masterpiece and very precise. I watched it again several nights ago.

The Home Guard is what frightens me most...what neighbor does to neighbor...unreal.

Yes. Much of the horror happened in places where irregulars took revenge, and acted not as professional soldiers but merely attacked and created wanton mayhem. That often internal division played out in border states like Tennessee, Kentucky, or in the West where many had relocated and yet it followed: Kansas for one.

See Ride with the Devil concerning Bushwhackers (supporters of the Confederacy) versus Jayhawkers (supporters of the Union). It often happened as a result of which immigration group you belonged to.

Is RIDE WITH THE DEVIL a new movie? I had never heard of it before; but, yes, that was what I was referring to by the Home Guard....I think.
