a couple in each side of tenn the other day, seemed to me things were waking up again. wasn't there a mid sized one in the "gulf of maine" the other day too?

i'd like to see a map that had ALL the eq's in the south US the past several months. i bet i would be surprised and more concerned.

In the hours after I posted this thread there was an Earthquake in Oklahoma (3.2) and New York (2.4) by the St. Lawrence Seaway! It even fits into the maps above!

Just wanted to throw in a couple more quakes from the last 24 hours that hit at the top of the line... Two hit just north of Ottawa, Canada (in Val des Bois, Quebec) in the evening of 15 Jan, a 3.5 and a 3.0.
They aren't on the USGS website, last I checked. But they are on the Natural Resources Canada earthquake page at (hope this link works, its my first post)

My concern is for all the retirees in RV's and young people
who go camping in the area. Any earth-changes of such
a significant magnitude as a major quake in the New Madrid
would have ripple effects across the whole country. I'd
hate to be stranded far away from home when something like
this happened! Just sayin.....

I have heard it several times in north Alabama. Sounds like a combination of a rocket engine and an earthquake without the building shaking. I know it is not the arsenal because you can tell the difference when they are practicing artillery from this wired rocket/earthquake sound. I used to live in Louisiana close to where they would test the space shuttle engines a long time ago. This weird sound reminds me of a rocket engine test. Maybe they are testing some new engine design on the arsenal. But this was much louder as you waited for the ground to open up.

Evansville, IN Resident here. Was hoping that is exactly what those booms were NOT related to. It makes perfect sense though. If this fault were to split, would there be any way a earthquake of the resulting magnitude could trigger across the country to the super volcano in Yellowstone? Not sure of how widespread the damage could be, but with a fault this big finally showing action, it seems like it could be plausible.

I live in the Lake Tahoe area. Drove down toward Carson City today on US 50 and got back home about 5:30 or so. Every fire station I drove by had their trucks outside their buildings. One station near the south end of Lake Tahoe had six trucks parked outside. Its lie they're on "alert". Might they park outside their stations to avoid having the vehiles trapped in a collapsed building? Just seemed odd. Maybe they were training or having a meeting? Who knows. Just had a hard freeze up here over the weekend. It got down to -14F where I live! Casinos at Stateline all had major ruptures in water pipes during this cold spell. Power was out at the big casinos on Friday Jan. 11, too. Talked to some guys who were in the parking lot who worked for one of the power co. up here and they didn't know what had caused the problem, so they say. Again, maybe something, maybe nothing. Just letting people know just in case.

Back in March, 2007 while at home in Aurora, Ohio, I heard this incredibly loud boom. My first thought was that it was a sonic boom because it was as loud as that and the windows in the house shook like they were from a sonic boom. But an instant after it occured I started thinking, "no, that wasn't a sonic boom because there was something slightly (and I mean very slightly) different in the sound when compared to a sonic boom".

As it turns out what I had experienced was, in fact, an earthquake. Here's the info about it:

MASONBORO ISLAND, NC (WECT) – Hundreds of thousands of dead fish have been reported this week at Masonboro Island by state environmental officials, according to a spokesperson for the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Environmental officials explain that the fish, Atlantic menhaden, which travel in very large groups, took a wrong turn, up Loosins Creek.

In under an hour, the area caused dissolved oxygen levels in the water to drop to close to zero, which ended up killing them.

As a result, the dead fish have been discovered along the island's beaches and in the water.

Officials say they've noticed a pattern of dead fish in winter months and attribute it to the menhaden tightening their school.

Workers with Coastal Management, Water Quality and Marine Fisheries are keeping an eye on the area, and throughout the weekend, dead fish will probably continue to surface.

The workers have a monitoring station set up that checks the water for dissolved oxygen levels, temperature, pH levels and other data.

"This may be the first time we have had continuous monitoring of water quality in an area at the exact time of a fish kill," said Jim Gregson, Surface Water Protection supervisor for the state Division of Water Quality, in a statement. "The data recorded by Coastal Management's monitoring station was a big help in determining the cause of this event."

"You want to make sure it's not an algae or something that could be a concern for human health and a lot of times, you don't know what caused it," said Stephanie Garrett, who is with NCDENR. "Being able to look at what the physical conditions were at the time, you can see that they just ran out of oxygen."

Officials say that while the dead fish don't necessarily pose a danger to humans, they want to make visitors aware of the occurrence.

"With the weekend going to be nice and people going to be on the beaches, they're going to see dead fish," Garrett warned.

Thousands of dead fish wash up on Pawleys Island beach


PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. -- Thousands of dead fish washed up on a beach at Pawleys Island on Tuesday afternoon -- just a week after hundreds of thousands also died near Wilmington.

The fish are menhaden and are on the south end of Pawleys Island, police confirmed. The SC Department of Natural Resources has been notified of the incident.

Hundreds of thousands of menhaden also died last week in a creek near Masonboro Island outside Wilmington.

The fish there apparently clustered tightly in a narrow area at Loosins Creek earlier in the week, causing oxygen levels in the water to plummet to nearly zero in less than an hour.

Big die-offs from menhaden bunched tightly together, possibly due to the presence of predators, have been seen before, especially in winter months.

It's unclear what lead to the fish deaths in Pawleys Island, but it's possible similar conditions happened there.

North Carolina environmental officials say measuring equipment at the site of the Wilmington-area fish kill allows them to pinpoint the reason the Atlantic menhaden are dead.

In NC, water quality monitoring equipment in the area recorded the sharp drop in dissolved oxygen early last Tuesday morning.

"We are aware of the large amount of menhaden fish that have washed up on the south end. DNR notified," Pawleys Island police said on a social media website, where they also posted a photo.

That probably makes more sense than what I was thinking...ongoing battles with underground dwelling space aliens!

My fear is that it's actually bigger than the New Madrid fault. I have no proof, nothing tangible. I get an uneasy feeling about the entire North American plate...these booms are being heard all over the country.
