Biking in the Snow - Dutch Style
We had a snow storm in Holland. Traffic jams of record size, cars and trucks at a stand-still. Yet, the bikers kept on biking, snow or not!

We have lots of idiots that bike to work in the winter.
I'm always afraid they are going to slip right under the wheels of my car.

On the other hand, riding the trails in the winter is a blast!!

My old Dutch bike doesn't work so well in the snow, you need those mountain bike tires.

Mountain bike tires. they are all knubbly and extra wide for grip.

That and good brakes are all you need for winter biking, well maybe a snowsuit to keep you warm too.

This morning there were numerous bikers going to work .
It's -30c today. Crazy bastards.

I see now, you had a mountain bike with kick arse tires. Yeah, these Dutch are cruising along with old, bald tires, half of the time!

BTW, good tip:

Place around the tire and rim of your bike wheel TIE-WRAPS about every 3 inches. Poor mans snow chains!

Oh, good one, I'll remember that.

At least if you get stuck in the snow with the bike you can get yourself out.
Just pick up the bike and turn it around.
It's a pain in the ass to get a stuck car out.

Spent over an hour on Sunday digging the neighbours car out of the back lane.

Yea, the nostril hair freezing is always delightful.
Right up there with snotty noses from the cold.

We actually have mitts that have built in snot wipers for those times when you are out in the elements and it's too cold to pull out a kleenex.

Yes, indeed. And snow is FAR better then ice. I wiped out once on an icy patch on my bike, did not see it coming, taking a corner - much like in that video of yours and then WAM, on my ass, well side (hip took it hard). Took the breath away from me.

I don't feel like finding it, but I saw a bike online that was outfitted with a ski kind of thing for the front wheel and then the wheel in the bike would ride in the track made.

No sleep here. Let me try again. I saw a bike online that was outfitted with a ski kind of thing for the front wheel and then the rear wheel would ride in the track made.

I did go chase some links, found cool beans:
