i don't mean to be cold, i do feel bad for the hostages.
but isn't this BP's problem? why do militaries have to get involved? why do my soldiers have to go die for an oilfield?
BP fucked up the entire ocean with their gulf spill disaster and corexit solution. the entire gulf coast is dieing horrible deaths, and BP thinks have have made a "fair settlement" with a few million dollars. the ocean is fucked up FOREVER. our gulf coast is fucked up FOREVER.
BP has gazillions of dollars, shouldn't they have their own private security for their oilfields?
why dont they just broker a deal with the hostage takers and resolve this bloodlessly?

sixty makes more sense with that many hostages -- how could six control the plant? guess we'll find out eventually

Dahou Ould Kablia, Algeria's interior minister, said there would be no negotiations with the hostage takers, as Algerian troops and helicopters surrounded the base.
"The authorities will not respond to any of the terrorists' demands and refuse all negotiation," he said on national television.
Some 150 local Algerian staff from the French firm CIS Catering are also being detained at the base after an attack by "around sixty" Islamists, the company CEO Régis Arnoux.
"I have 150 Algerian employees who have been given freedom of movement in the base unlike the foreign hostages who are shut up in a corner and not allowed to move. But (the Algerian employees) are not allowed to leave the base," he told AFP.

Islamists in N.Mali are experts in these things, read somewhere that they made more than $100 million since 2003 just from paid ransom.

The plant is huge,(3rd biggest in Algeria), in any such plant you have hundreds of employees, so I knew from the get go, that no way in hell, would only 6 terrorists have accomplished this...
