Re: Very interesting earthquake statistic over the last 30 days.....
Obviously the person who pinned this thread did the math on all the earthquakes occuring at the 10 km depth level.
This morning when I checked the data there were currently 192 earthquakes (4.0 magnitude or higher) out of a total of 611.
This means that out of 611 earthquakes worldwide... 31.4% of them occured at the 10 km depth level.
 Quoting: ººEATºº

So what's so strange about that?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14505884

In a nutshell... 10 kms deep is where the Earth's oceanic crust and Earth's mantle meet. The mantle is full of magma. The techtonic plates are influenced by the magma in the mantle.
In the end it doesn't even matter...
Really?really?

There is some speculation about the iron dumped in the ocean months back in international waters off of British Columbia, hypothetically to cause an algae bloom to up the salmon stocks, have you investigated any of that angle OP?

Do you not find it interesting that 22% of the world's earthquakes (4.0+ magnitude) occur at a depth of 10 km.........

Since 2004, it has been the massive SUBDUCTION earthquakes that have caused clusters of the 4.0 + magnitude earthquakes. Just out of curiosity... how many 4.0+ earthquakes were generated by the March 11, 2011 subduction earthquake off the coast of Japan? Try the same with earthquakes after the 2004 Sumatra earthquake or the 8.8 Bio Bio Chile earthquake.
I guess what I am trying to say is that clusters of 4.0+ quakes come in waves and they are usually found right around the time of a massive subduction earthquake.

Over the last 30 days there have been 514 earthquakes WORLDWIDE with a magnitude of 4.0 or higher.

Check out the facts for yourself:
[link to www.iris.edu]

Here is the very interesting thing...

114 out of the 514 earthquakes occurred at the depth of 10km ( 6 miles )

22% of all the stronger earthquakes in the last 30 days have occurred at the 10 km (6 mile) level.

I ask you this... what the hell is going on 6 miles below sea level?

This is very interesting. Very interesting.

Take a look at this earthquake map.
Take a look at the Pacific Plate.
Notice all the earthquakes all around it?
Now... look at the west coast USA.... there is NOTHING!!!
According to the law of average, Do you think that it is possible that area is due for a large earthquake any day now?

It's mid-ocean default set at 10 km.

[link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

Sometimes when depth is poorly constrained by available seismic data, the location program will set the depth at a fixed value. For example, 33 km is often used as a default depth for earthquakes determined to be shallow, but whose depth is not satisfactorily determined by the data, whereas default depths of 5 or 10 km are often used in mid-continental areas and on mid-ocean ridges since earthquakes in these areas are usually shallower than 33 km.

Wow, I'll look into that! Was it one wing or both? Do you have a link? Seriously though at the time I remember there was speculation that this could be an issue and the iron was dumped pretty close to a fault line. I don't have a link to the site that was speculating about it, and the information was nowhere near conclusive, but there was a scientific basis to their assertions. I just thought the OP as an quaketard (in the strange language of glp) he might have some information or opinion on that angle.

there is a 7-7.9 on average every 20 days

a 6-6.9 every 2 to 3 days

when there is a lull for a few weeks or months that pressure gets released in a cluster and it works its way through a system of faults around the globe

earthquakes happen

so this is your hobby running around screaming that the sky is falling and people who normally take no notice of these banal things give you credence because they are unfamiliar with the cycles

HERE IS THE DATA on the percentage of earthquakes ( magnitude 4.0+ ) at the depth of 10 kms since January 17:

January 17 ...22%
January 30 ...26%
February 5 ... 27.5%
February 6 ... 31.4%

 Quoting: ººEATºº

Just keep double checking the data for the next few days and if the % continues to rise... then in my books a subduction earthquake is at hand. That is just the way I interpret the data.
Before you slam my theory, please tell me how many earthquakes (4.0+) occured 2 months before and 4 months after March 11, 2011. I would not doubt the number would be 5,000 or more.
In the end it doesn't even matter...

but I will add this.

since they knocked the Solomon Island quake back to 7.9 that knocks it into the run of the mill 20 day quake category

Last April we had the rather odd twin 8s in the Indian Ocean I think it was.

So maybe we are about to get our 8-9.x

It is my belief that 200-300 years ago the earthquakes were actually far more frequent and frequently powerful than they are today.

Go read some eye witness descriptions from the Jesuits in and around the Philippines in 1700-1800s.

Aha! I have figured it out my friends....

The Oceanic Crust is about 10km thick!
Check it out for yourself: [link to scign.jpl.nasa.gov]

If you go back and check out the 114 earthquakes that occurred at 10kms you will see that the vast majority of them occurred in the OCEAN.... and of course, how thick is the crust under the Ocean? You got it... the Oceanic Crust is about 10kms thick, or 6 miles for you Americans.

Now.... right underneath the Oceanic Crust is where you will find the UPPER MANTLE.

SO... it looks like there is a WORLDWIDE DISTURBANCE at the top of the UPPER MANTLE where it meets/touches the Oceanic Crust.

What other reason would there be?
