One might think that the effect of gravity on
the atmosphere would crush us all..
but it doesn't.

[ link to en.wikipedia.org] This matches air pressure just fine. If you can't do the measurements and calculate the numbers all you can ever do is guess.  A column of air one square meter is said to weigh over 100,000 Newtons or 10.2 metric tons.. Air pressure is a force in all directions.. gravity is a force pressing down.. atmosphere is gas, not air pressure. We must be supermen to resist this weight.. The secret ingredient is the fact that we're mostly liquids. You seem to be rather confuddled about what it is that causes air pressure.
