Question for mac users
I just got a new macbook pro. Other than iphones and ipods this is the first apple product I have had in 7-8 years.

I was just wondering what are some must do's and must have apps/programs. I have spent the last few days reading quite a bit, but I know there are a lot of mac users on here, so I figured I might be able to learn something from the GLP community.

BTW, I love it thus far!!

Thanks!

I was thinking of doing this, and probably will, but I still have my other laptop as well. As soon as I get everything transferred I will be clearing it up at re-installing w7, and also partitioning a drive for linux, just so I can learn it.

Thanks!

I agree. I have to use parallels for work but apart from that everything I need runs on my macs.

xQuake is useful and chrome on a mac runs really fast. I use Thunderbird for email as it hooks into Gmail and others so well.

Do you like chrome more than firefox18? I liked firefox more on pc but maybe they are different on macs.

Hey Patrick, MBP is a great machine you won't regret it. cheers

As for apps, something like Appzapper is useful for uninstalling apps, Istat menus is very cool also for monitoring your cpu and stuff, check Toast for the latest version for disc-burning and Transmission if you do torrents. That's for starters, lots of stuff out there.

Toast is something like Nero is for windows, cd-dvd burning, copying etc. but is actually a bit better than Nero for me, you can do some video-audio converting with it if you like but i have other programs for this job.

I answered above. :)
Since i'm on a roll i'll suggest some more you may find useful, '4Media DVD Ripper' is good for dvd ripping if you do some, 'Flip 4 Mac' allows you to play wmv files, 'Perian' is great for codecs stuff on your Quicktime, get 'NTFS-3g' or 'Macfuse' so you can write-copy on NTFS formatted hd's, 'Growl' is cute too for notifications, 'Unrarx' for rar files.

Re: Question for mac users
Thanks everyone for all of the advice so far, but I have another ?. Does anyone have a great firewall and or antivirus program(s) they would recommend for macs? I am reading lots of mixed reviews.

Any opinions on zonealarm or comodo? At least for firewalls?

Little Snitch (Network Sniffer), Magican (RAM cleaner, uninstaller, multipackaged program), Homebrew (Package manager), compile MTR (matts trace route), Zenmap, Nping, Ettercap, Packet peeper, Transmission, Torbrowser.

You don't need parallels. If you're smart, you can wrap any program in either Wine or Cider.
