Armenia and Azerbaijan had a border shooting incident about 2 weeks ago, nothing serious and happens a lot, the tension between them is permanent. Talks about the struggle for influence and the alliances formed in Azerbaijan and the delicate South Caucasus region. Quoting: insertfunnyusername The standoff between Iran and the West has moved into the Caucasus, where both the Islamic Republic and Israel are trying to woo Azerbaijan -- a country with firm historical connections to Iran but whose interests have overlapped with those of Israel. The dynamic is upsetting the regional balance of power and threatening to overturn nearly two decades of uneasy peace. I think Azerbaijan will have to give up on the Karabakh, eventually. Russia don't really support Armenia so much in that dispute, but they like having a military base there. Cher's father came from Armenia (bit of useless information for you there). I've been down there a few times - the Armenians I've met are nice people. |

Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognized as Azerbaijan territory, maybe intl community is turning a blind eye on Armenia because of the territories they lost with Wilsonian Armenia, dunno. Armenians are nice people indeed, we have lots in common with them and lots of common history going very back in time, thanks for Cher info, didn't know about it indeed, hehe. What your take about Caucasus situation since you living there? New Georgia leadership says that it wants to be neutral now, but suspect moves are suspect imo. Very interested to hear your views. :) |

Very interested to hear your views. :) The old regime were as corrupt as can be and Saakashvili was trying to twist the constitution so that he could retain power as Prime Minister, but they didn't reckon on Ivanishvili stepping into politics. Ivanishvili's a good guy - buckets of money but very benevolent and a good commander. Don't believe everything you read about arrests and persecutions because Saakashvili's well-oiled PR machine is still working overtime trying to undermine the new government before they get around to investigating the highly suspicious death of the then serving Prime Minister Zurab Zvhania back in 2005. Saakashvili's party did everything they could to try and steal the elections and still lost heavily, so you can factor in the number of rigged votes to give you a truer picture of just how much the people of Georgia wanted change. It was interesting to see that the US Ambassador here was an almost daily visitor to Ivanishvili's residence at one point in the pre-election period, and I'd say he's definitely on Ivanishvili's side (even though he can't say so). Here's a little light reading for you about the sort of people the new government are putting behind bars... [link to en.wikipedia.org] |

New PM made his money in Russia and wants to restore ties, remains to be seen if the West will let him do that. Glad you guys had the change you wanted, war with Russia was a bad idea to begin with let alone govt corruption and such, didn't know that Saakashvili was so unpopular there, western MSM sounded disappointed with the new PM election, hehe. |

Russia's a huge market so it makes sense to try to get on friendly terms with them rather than keep poking them with a stick and calling them "monsters" and "barbarians" all the time. The Georgians are still naturally very wary of the Russians but Ivanishvili is a very strong character who knows how to deal with them. The Russians have been very cautious in their comments about what the future holds but the big problem both sides face is what to do about the "occupied territories". I agree with Ivanishvili on this - that the only way forward is to encourage trade between these places (particularly Abkhazia) and Georgia and try to build up a level of trust which might lead to who knows where. There's a proposal from the Georgian side to restore the railway line which runs from Georgia to Russia via Abkhazia which would be very good from an Armenia point of view but this would also tick the Azerbaijanis off (and, to a lesser extent, the Turks but Turkey are already sizing up the development and trade potential of Abkhazia anyway so a rail link might suit them). It's a really tangled web round here but you can generally look at a map of the oil and gas pipelines to see who's friendly with who. Georgia's the only one who could be friendly with them all - which will be a nice position to be in. |

I know Georgians are very wary of Russia, but they now have to be wary of the west too if they are smart imo, Georgia was used as a bait by the west in 2008. "Occupied territories" is gonna be a problem that will take some time, tensions and wars about these territories since the 90's, i agree that a level of trust needs to be built and see where will this potentially can go. Tangled indeed, hope you can restore ties with all. Is it really a danger of losing Adjara? Read something like this in a French website once, potentially Kosovo scenario and all. Any truth in this? |

Read something like this in a French website once, potentially Kosovo scenario and all. Any truth in this? I don't think Adjara will break away again - there's a lot of development going on there and they've got it good compared to how it used to be 10 years ago. Turkish companies do particularly well down there, lots of Georgians go there on holiday, and BP have an export terminal there too, so it's all pretty much settled there now. I don't think Abkhazia will ever concede their independence so they're going to have to think outside the box a bit to resolve that case, but South Ossetia might have been a different prospect had it not been for the Russians building a base there. I think all these regional conflicts will go back into deep freeze. |

Thanks for info friend, i too believe that these conflicts need to go into deep freeze, it's for the best now for everyone to calm down. Read a few times that Turkish influence on the muslim population of Adjara is getting bigger by the day and that's why i asked you about it, but i'll take your word that nothing suspicious is happening. :) Last Edited by insertfunnyusername on 01/19/2013 07:42 AM |
