Teach someone to fish, and they can feed themselves for life.

Teach someone to hunt, and they can feed themselves for life.

Teach someone to grow, and they can feed themselves for life.

and always make sure to have salt. you can have all the water and food in the world but if you run out of salt you will die.

Excellent idea, also eat the Iodized salt and also purchase the non-Iodized salt for storing meats when there is no power to run any appliances for food storage.

Agreed. If nothing else....buy a big 40 lb bag of white rice. Don't open it. Wrap it in plastic and store it in a cool dry place. Bay leaves will keep bugs away from the rice.
A 40 lb bag of rice will keep your family alive for well over a month! But you will need a few more things too.
 Quoting: ººEATºº

The Mylar bags with Oxygen absorbers can be found cheap on amazon.

for 30 bucks and some time you could have many pounds of food preserved to last for 50 years or more.. hands down this is the best way to package your food...
 Quoting: Liquid_Pestilence

Where do you get these mylar bags? AT a army surplus store or sporting good store? In Canada we have a outdoor/sports co-op called Mountain Equipment Co-op...maybe they sell them?
 Quoting: new & improved

Very little you can't get at Amazon.com and quick too.

 Quoting: new & improved

Mountain equipment co-op is too expensive.
Here is what I use. I have cats so I go thru alot of cat litter. I buy it in the mylar jugs from Costco. Then, when they are empty I wash them out real good... and fill with rice.
 Quoting: ººEATºº

You need the Oxygen Absorbers in there also.
They are food safe and work by chemical reaction to scrub the Oxygen out of the bag.
The mylar is used because it doesnt breath.
Oxygen Is the number one reason foods go bad.
Remove the Oxygen and studies have shown that foods like rice and beans can last almost forever.
 Quoting: Liquid_Pestilence

Lol. I save all those packets from bags of beef jerky or when i buy new shoes or hand warmers. Wait, Hand warmers do the same thing (hint hint)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8379586

The reaction is a form of rust, they are one time use. A package of 60 can be found online for under 10 bucks.. they are cheap and years better then any technology we have now for storing food.

If there's no food available, there won't be any gasoline either. Raiders are not gonna come from very many miles away.

Stock up on dog food. Keep your watch dogs alive, and you can eat it, too, if you get hungry. then you can eat the dogs if starving.

100# Beans, 100# rice, 50# pop-corn, 5 gallons of lard or vegetable oil, couple pounds of salt, a few dozen cans of salmon, chicken, or mackerel--easily keep a couple of people alive for a year.

Throw in some freeze dried veggies and some Ramen noodles, and you're livin' high on the hog.
 Quoting: MuzzleBreak

Great ideas. However, unless you use it up soon, vegetable oil goes rancid fairly quick.
Vegetable oil should be one of the things on your list to rush and buy when TSHTF.
I think lard has a better shelf life, but don't quote me on that.
 Quoting: ººEATºº

 Quoting: chowan

I have a very large food stash but have n0 cooking oils. The cooking oils that I first bought went rancid long ago so I decided buying any sort of cooking oil was a waste of money.
Anyways, I never did by lard. Do you know how long the shelf life of lard is? I guess the better question would be to ask how long does lard keep before it goes bad?

Flour/rice, etc. that can have 'bugs' that grow in the bag, over time (surprise) can be stopped by storing in 55 gallon drums ( Keeps OUT MICE, critters TOO ), WITH a ring/bolt at top and rubber gasket. Fill to top, Tighten lid down. THEN, using one of the small screw on caps on top, open up and place about a 2 INCH, BY 1/2 INCH, BY 1 INCH WIDE PEICE OF DRY ICE ( FROZEN CARBON DIOXIDE ) caps off - through the hole. Screw the cap down part way; leave it that way over night/24 hours and the HEAVIER than air gas it develops into will SINK to the bottom of the barrel and DRIVE OUT the oxygen/nitrogen via the threads of the cap. tighten cap. NOW the larva have NO oxygen to breath and die before developing into bugs. Flour good for many years !

My most favorite thing in my food stash is my Stag Chili by Hormel Foods.
-very versatile... can mix it with almost anything (rice, wheat, pasta, potatoes, soups, etc)
-tastes good
-long shelf life
-Hormel is a respected brand for food preppers (makes Spam)

Not the best way. Mylar bags and O2's is the best way to package dry foods and also kills all bugs. package your grains in 5 gallon bags with O2's then store them in the drum.. technology has advanced since carbon dioxide was popular.

Everyone is commenting about storing rice. I admit it is a good idea, but in moderation. Does everyone know that certain types of rice contain ARSENIC and over a period of time the levels will increase in your system and kill you... Its almost like eating apple seeds....

Here is a list from the FDA regarding samples taken in 2012 of various rice / country of origin / Arsenic levels....

Happy Reading

OP ... probably true, BUT, those gnawing rats, mice, squirrels and raccoons will be into your buckets before you will, in most cases. Besides, the 55 gallon drums will be great for water storage in winter; or, for transporting fuel oil and storage for winter, once you figure out where it will come from; I have, have you?

Fats tend to go rancid in most storage conditions. Oddly enough, canned fats don't seem to be plagued with that problem, though I don't understand what the difference is. Perhaps dissolved oxygen permeating the non canned fats?
