Something we eat weekly are omelets with Pace hot Salsa on them.

I was thinking about what a great item Pace Salsa is. You have your veggies, and your hot peppers are good for circulation.

U could also buy blue corn chips, which provide u with your corn and sea salt.

Also, V8s are so good for u, especially the low sodium.

We stock up on all of this. I don't care what anyone says this is good stuff and healthy...just saying...

It's a multifacted issue.

If Joe has 6 months of stored food but no weapons, and Bob has weapons but no food....

Bob's gonna eat very well & Joe is gonna starve.
 Quoting: HeyItsMe 546778

Maybe Bob will starve after Joe holds him at gunpoint?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32524672

Reality is....Joe and Bob are going to have to team up to save BOTH their asses from the roving bands of guerrilla thieves, rapists and murderers.

It also helps that Joe thinks Bob looks cute in a dress.

I agree with you, OP. We bought a sailboat after the economy crashed and have slowly stocked it with about 1000 lbs. of food. When SHTF, we will be leaving on it. There's lots of islands around the South Pacific to explore, and it's warm.

Bottom line is, if it happens we must remain calm and courteous. I know in my heart, that there are more good people out there than bad. As soon as the shtf, instict will kick in and a knowing need for cooperation will prevail. Just watch.
 Quoting: Bent

Don't count on that at the outset and a ways into it.

That comes later.

Before that would be the winnowing of all the self-centered raised on violence screaming me me mes who try to take from others what they should have taken care of themselves.

I don't like guns. Never did.
I have them, though, because they are necessity.

I know, but we must have that mindset at the outset.

Help one another.

Thread: Help each other.
 Quoting: Bent

Bent, I agree.....we could all survive what is coming if we would just help each other out, its that easy, but unfortunatly that is probably not whats going to happen. You are right, there are more people who care then we think, just take a look around this site in itself, but we are still going to be the minorities when tshif. I am going to help out whoever I can when things fall apart, that is until the bad guys get to me. Best wishes to you and your family.

If its really that bad remember that you could always walk away. I bet you are within a few weeks walk of some awesome jungles just ripe with food. Not sure if you have been to these parts, but the jungles are worse than anywhere if TSHTF, as everyone else would do the same.

In my case there is no answer.

Those who think fishing will be the solution, be aware that millions upon millions of fish have and are dying.

The only people that will make it will be the ones who are in control of the seedbanks that are dotted around the world.

All other foodstuffs will likely be contaminated - including freshwater streams.

Also the US have guns to protect them, many civilians do not have that and I fear they will be the most vunerable.

I remember when the storms hit Cancun, some friends were living there and everything was flooded with no electricity.

They had to rally together on 24 hour patrols because armed thugs were trying to rob them.

That is important, you need 24 hour patrols or have some hi tech tripwires and IR Cams to monitor the area, so make sure you work in shifts.

All these items and others are covered in this thread:

Here is another TIP that I read online, as crazy as it sounds!

Make SURE to have clothing that is very baggy on YOU and your family.

Then when someone comes attempting to steal your food, or look for food, if they see you appearing THIN and pale, they will BELIEVE you have nothing to eat!!!

Here is what you get:

 Quoting: Liquid_Pestilence

This is all good, but deceptive. What's a "serving"?

It's better to figure out how many meals a bucket or container holds. That is, how many person/meals - for a person engaged in heavy duty physical activity.

That's the only real way to plan, since a "serving" seems to be defined only by the producer in a way that makes the product look best.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32500486

I'm just catching up- wasn't able to get back into this thread last evening.

This is a very important question for those paying attention. Most of the dehydrated or freeze-dried meals contain roughly 260 - 320 calories per serving - and this is pretty universal throughout the food suppliers. These "servings" are broken down with regard to caloric content that is spread across the spectrum of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. These "servings" are "Life-sustaining" quantities.

One of, if not the greatest issues folks overlook is that their is absolutely zero comparison with their typical daily life being stuck in a cubicle opposed to any type of "survival" situation. From this, one must understand that the necessary caloric intake will vary widely.

If you're stuck in your house for a few days because of a power outage, or say a snow storm; you can exist on a 1,200 calorie/ day diet.

However, if you're in a more remote/ dynamic setting; Moving/ changing location, cutting/ hauling wood for fire/ staying warm are the big three calorie eaters, and you will quickly enter the area of ~3,200 calories/ day necessary to fuel your body and maintain health.

I don't believe it benefits anyone looking to store food for themselves and their family to be misled, so we strive to make sure one understands the need for calories relevant to the proposed activities as clearly as possible.

I honestly believe the greatest pitfalls still lie ahead for those who believe "we'll just head for the mountains", but have no real experience/ exposure in that environment, are not physically/ mentally prepared (our "Prepping the Prepper" article can be found here: [link to mtnx.info] ), or the hard work that it actually entails. The stresses alone (physical/ mental/ psychological) that often accompanies these types of events will alter how your body digests and processes food. Add into the equation a "new" food that your body is not familiar with, and these issues can all be complicated for the next three (3) days or more - I've seen it happen to people more times than I can count.

"Prepping" is much, much more than accumulating "stuff" - regardless if it's food, firearms, or other related gear. "Prepping" is lifestyle that begins with preparing one's mindset, but relies heavily on combining this mindset with skill sets obtained through time and exposure. What does this mean? If you have firearms - become proficient in their use now (this includes cleaning and maintenance). If you're storing food - learn how to prepare it efficiently, as well as eat it often enough that you are familiar with the taste and digestion. If you have an axe - learn to swing it properly and efficiently AS WELL AS HOW TO CORRECTLY SHARPEN IT now - this goes for all of your edged tools. Most import; get out and do something - it's great for both your mind and body.

Remember; Prepping is a lifestyle consisting of a multi-tiered approach for addressing concerns ranging from the "possible" to the "probable".

 Quoting: chowan

It's not a silly argument at all - it's a reality that we must address, as these two examples surely exist. I hear both sides every week.

The truth is BOTH of these people have failed to prepare, and BOTH of these people will likely die in short order.

If Joe hasn't factored in firearms as both protection and supplementing his food - he has fallen short. If he was one of those folk who believe "Eewww - guns are icky"; he likely doesn't have an axe available either (for some reason this is more common than you think), or familiarity with using it. He will just as likely die from freezing as from Bob. Yes, you can cut wood with other tools. You must factor in efficiency (more calories burned) and longevity (how long will this alternate tool last?) as to how tools, or lack thereof, will change the potential outcome.

If Bob hasn't factored in sustenance other than his weapon, he will face issues as well. Going straight into a diet consisting of "prepper food" with no prior exposure - Bob's gut is going to become quite disagreeable with him. What is Bob's familiarity with the environment? I ask this because it is typically people living in a more urban environment that express this mindset. If he plans on taking Joe's preps in a more remote environment - a lacking in skill sets may well be his demise - especially that of creating fire to both cook and heat with.

Those who are what you may classify as "serious preppers" do not follow one, single line in belief they are prepared. They also, however, are not the ones who ever espouse "I'm coming to take your food". The "serious preppers", in my experience, are also people openly willing to help others - even if it be through guidance and theoretical direction. Those making statements that would fit "Bob" - these are not "Preppers" in any sense - they are leeches. These people are a liability that will also be dead in short order, but without an encompassing plan to protect yourself, your family, and your various stores - you place yourself (and your family) at risk of becoming a statistic right alongside him.

As I have stated before; Prepping is a multi-tiered approach to addressing both the "probable" as well as "possible".

Rice + beans = the perfect protein combination
Rice + beans is the staple food of many of the world's poor people.

The foundation of any food stash should be rice and beans!

CANNED BEANS are what you want. Canned beans and rice. Then spread out from there.... soups, meats, etc
 Quoting: ººEATºº

Just to add.

For long term food storage in mylar. Pinto beans store just like white rice. They are also cheap in bulk and if stored correctly will last 50 plus years..

pinto beans and white rice is the bulk of my food stores.. Not the best eats, but better then nothing
 Quoting: Liquid_Pestilence

I could never get mylar bags to seal properly so I resorted to sealing my rice in food saver vacuum bags with 300cc oxygen absorbers. I then placed these in buckets, sealed with several oxygen absorbers.

I'm not an expert but I think the rice would store for at least 10 years like this.

This has great validity as the discussion grows legs beyond food and firearms.

The five (5) criteria for choosing a "spot"

1) Threat Level
2) Is it defensible?
3) Access & Egress
4) Resources
5) Liabilities

These are outlined in "The Urban Dilemma" [link to mtnx.info]

The cautionary tale that applies to all positions you may consider, even if only as temporary shelter, or as a place to set up a longer encampment: "If it looks like a good house - someone (man or best) may likely already have claimed it". Make sure you check it out as best you can before venturing in too far or settling down too quickly.

On reading Clydex' great statements...

I have been a prepper for 40 years. It is a lifestyle. No one can cover all the details in a post like this, but details like the above are must know info.

Another thing to think about is the needed cooking equipment for rough times. Your little pots and pans are not going to suffice for hardship food prep. It is not just boil water and pour into the pouch.

The long term means pots of soup, or stew, or beans or beans & rice for your family and maybe a few new assimilated members who will join you for protection and survival.

Go to a restaurant supply shop (or Craig’s list) and get a couple of LARGE cooking pots with lids. Get several sizes so some can be cooking while some is getting eaten and the beans for tomorrow are soaking.

Walk around and see the storage containers, the soup ladles, the big wooden spoons, the tubs you can use to clean and carry foods and the pans for baking. Having these things put aside safe and protected for the special day will make life a lot easier. A big bowl for kneading bread makes that easier.

I have a tall stack of restaurant bowls that are easy to clean and all the same size. It makes everyone feel equal and part of the group.

With all the new heavier work the family will be learning to do, eating well from scratch meals will bolster the heart and spirit as well as the strength.

Do not forget the "Stone Soup" of legend. Not everyone will have a lot, but everyone bringing a little to the pot will have everyone fed and cheerful.

So think of the details of food prep. Not just the food but how to cook it, mix it and share it around.coffee4
