We used to do exactly the same thing when I was growing up in Ohio. We had a creek just behind our house and all the boys would shovel the snow off to play hockey. Not all the boys had sticks, most would use brooms and whatever they could find for a puck. At least, until after Christmas!LOL We girls would pretend we were Olympic skaters. It didn't work out well, wearing my brother's hand me down hockey skates. Ice 2 years in a row! We lived in Utrecht province for 5 years in the late 80's/early 90's. No ice for us. We use to hear the stories from our neighbors, though. I wish I could have seen it. Hope you all enjoy it! Last Edited by Texan Buckeye on 01/19/2013 02:38 PM |

Yes, for a long period the Dutch had less colder winters and no freeze ups like this. For the last, oh, 8 or 9 years, it is certainly colder for longer periods. Great for ice skating! They hope to be able to hold the 11-city ice skating marathon this year. Problem is, it is likely going to snow again tomorrow, which is a bummer for ice on large bodies of water. Canals like these in the film can be cleared with limited manpower. Skating on creeks and frozen streams is AWESOME! Always nice when a pick-up game of ice-hockey breaks out! We once found a cool stream in the woods back in the 70's in New Hampshire and it was something else. Got so cold, that the small stream was frozen solid! So you could like ski down stream, over little mini, frozen waterfalls and the likes. Was just incredible. Very magical, in a very real way. It only snowed a few times for us, but it was so beatiful! Huge flakes. I hope they get to do the marathon again. Our neighbors told us so many stories about it and they were waiting for ice. It had been such a long time. I love watching the videos from the Netherlands, it brings back many happy memories! |

As you likely know, Spring is a great time and Queens Day (April 30th) is always just a ton of fun. OK< back to skating... More info on the 11-city race (more for others, for it really is amazing), the Elfstedentoch - The Elfstedentocht [ɛɫf'steːdə(n)tɔxt] (West Frisian: Âlvestêdetocht, English: Eleven cities tour), at almost 200 kilometres (120 mi), is a speed skating match (with 200 contestants) and a leisure skating tour (with 16,000 skaters). It is held in the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, touching every city (by history) of the province. It is held, in practice in January or February and not more than once in a year, when the natural ice along the entire course is at least 15 centimetres (6 in) thick;[1] sometimes on consecutive years, other times with gaps that may exceed 20 years. When the ice is suitable the tour is announced, and starts within 48 hours.
