I agree 100%. I've noticed that most Americans don't visit other countries. The racist mentality in general might have something to do with it. Yes, a surprisingly small percentage of Americans travel outside the U.S. It's impossible to explain how powerful the propaganda machine is there, and how terrified of the world it makes you when you grow up being inundated with that kind of propaganda. Excepting a few other developed countries, like maybe England and France, the average American truly believes that the rest of the world is a fantastically dangerous, disgusting shithole, best avoided. I meet VERY few Americans when I'm in Asia, Africa, or South America. Luckily, the Americans I do meet in those places are very different from the norm -- far more enlightened and forward-thinking. I almost invariably like them. |

I don´t understand why you´re writing negative things about your country, i really don´t. I think you maybe do harm which can´t be undone easily(like those false stories our newspapers wrote about what happened in Kenya) and i can´t and will not participate in this. Besides that, i have nothing interesting to tell at all - but i am full of nice, beautiful but personal anecdotes from my stay there. I saw the the notsobeautiful side, too, but it can´t keep up with the nice things, if you may understand. India for me is one of the most contrastive countries, you can´t compare it to any other. As some other users here wrote "a shithole" - and I like to add: the most beautiful a shithole can ever be. Some of my friends who have been there, too, hate India, so I suppose: you either fall in love with her instantly, or the total opposite. there is nothing in between. But the government and the society as a whole needs to be shown the mirror at times. They need to know what they are doing wrong and where they are going wrong. Any system, culture or civilization that does not learn to adapt or introspect is doomed. Please do not misjudge my intentions. I take great pride in the fact that some of my articles in the past had forced the government to stand up and take notice. You might be aware of the attacks on the Benghazi War Cemetery, which was condemned by the prime ministers of UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. There were many Indian graves in that cemetery, too, which nobody talked about. Our govt kept mum over the issue even though 2.5 million Indian soldiers fought in WWII for the British Empire, my maternal grandfather being one of them. Acting on a hunch that Indian graves, too, may have been destroyed, I found out the names of Indian soldiers buried there and details of their families. My article forced the Government of India to send a team to Benghazi. They found that 9 Indian graves had been destroyed by the vandals. Our government took it up with the NTC Govt of Libya, and Libya officially apologized to India. The Indian govt, unfortunately, didn't even know that we pay for the upkeep of that cemetery. Do you think I did a nasty thing? Then there were certain anomalies in the passport issuing system. People were being harassed with demands for documents and more documents. I did a series of articles on that and the External Affairs Ministry announced reforms immediately. Today, although there are issues, but it is still easier to get a passport in India. Good things about the country are reported quite often, but even other countries should write good about us. How will that happen if foreign tourists are cheated and harassed? A lot needs to change. A lot. And if journalists keep quiet and write only about the good things, the bad things will lie unnoticed and fester. There are many things that I want to say, but I guess this is not the right place for that. Feel free to drop me a line or two about what changes you would like to see the next time you come to India; or, what you think the government and the police need to do to make foreigners feel safe. (i was exactly told that by a Kenyan guy whom i talked to when visiting this beautiful country. I was there, while ministry of foreign affairs warned about civil war there due to the election fraud some years ago - and our newspaper BILD had the headlines "2 Germans beheaded with machete" which was absolutely nothing but fearmongering and Kenya had to deal with a decline of 90% visitors due to all this stupid nonreal stuff) but i did meet some other stupid tourists who run around all "oh those poor people", not knowing a word like "hello, thank you, good bye" in the language of the country they are visiting and throw their money around / show their wealth. some pay the price they are told without even thinking, so i can´t blame anyone who makes a months salary by selling to just one stupid whitey. eg one austrian girl i met while traveling SOA, she got her handbag robbed (that´s what she told me) on her way home from partying, drinking, drugusing - so i don´t blame anyone than herself. maybe she even lost it due to her condition. this girl was that stupid, that she lost her passport while crossing the border from cambodia to thailand (while she had to go peepee), got angry and even yelled at the cambodian who found it and brought it right to her. she completely was impolite and "lost her face", because she couldn´t even speak english properly and blamed this guy for stealing it! (i was with her and her friend the whole day, no way the cambodian did it! she is just not able to look after herself). btw, this girl had complete new&high end travelbag and stuff. i won´t blame anyone in any country trying to make his share when having to deal with those kind of foreigners. those tourists who don´t show respect to the people of the country they are visiting or are just plain stupid - i am not sorry if they get pulled over the table. Err... no! Better watch yourself girl. Of course there are decent people everywhere. There are a lot of fucked up ones too. To some extend it'll depend on your luck who you meet. It's good to be respectful of course, but be cautious too. |
