i'm doing online course work with MIT.. the 'leggo' programming app they provide for android app programming is simply plug and play for the programmer, same with the camera details plugin... just can't think of a non-evil app to develop and deploy... ;)

Yeah, I have to admit I will still be a FB whore as well. I have a crappy pre-paid cell phone anyway and wouldn't agree to any app like the ones posted.

Not true at all. I use it to stay in contact and share pics with far away friends and family members. FB can be anything you want it to be.

And privacy? No one has privacy anywhere, including being on GLP. If any of the letter agencies wanted info. on you it would be super easy whether or not someone has a FB page.

Simple solution, log out of the damn thing every time you use it.

There's a reason for the piece of black tape pasted over the webcam on my laptop as well as the fact that my computer doesn't have an internal mic. If it did, the wires would have been clipped or unplugged already.

One must remember that the government can do all that Facebook is alerting you to without warrant or reason. They possess the means to spy on you through your computer mics, webcams, E-mails, web trafficing, etc. Not to mention government openly records and monitors phone calls, tracks phones through GPS, has the capability to spy through televisions with built in camera technology, etc.

I hate having my civil liberties and privacy being encroached on as a law abiding citizen who has never done nothing wrong which explains why I take the time to make myself less vulnerable to these spying techniques. It's nearly impossible to be off grid though, as long as you have a phone, internet, newer computer controlled vehicle, even just walking down the street, etc. you can easily be spied upon. It's just the day and age we live in.

As a side note, the case of Pennsylvania schools a couple years ago charged with activating webcams in their students computers to spy on them and their families, in their own homes, just further validates how easy it is to pull off these tactics. The worrisome part is that you don't need social media to fall victim to these tactics.

Gotta say, you do kow The Patriot Act, let's the US government read any bit of info stored on any server based in the US or territories. The reason why I never filled out the census, fuck me if you did a whois on the Website for doing it online it came back as LockheedMartin in the US

Also have to say to the poster that says it helps sharing photos and staying in contact, stop being so fucking lazy and trying to do everything in one place, if they are on line they must have an email address, so mail them direct and send any photos direct, stop trying to show the 'world' you care

It's just a preference. If you want to be asked for permission for an app to use your camera when you ask it to take a photo then set the preference accordingly. If you would rather make life easier for yourself and not be asked if an app can use the camera every time you use the app to take a photo then that's your choice too. Seriously, if someone thinks the government wants to watch and listen to everyone playing Angry Birds then facebook is the least of their problems. Not to mention who will pay for the extra transfer of data streaming video and audio from billions of devices around the world.

Not that I would ever use facebook myself but not because of this.

for the last ten years, i on-sell server side software, with an 'install on demand' client run through AD, silently and it is there... for that i can access everything... everything... now, i was onselling for good ie: timeframing to sit and fix and such in large scenarios... give it to a gimp.. well....

they have it, I HAD IT.... it exist.. give me hands on as a nobody (i was licenced)... and i can have ultra god on your server.. even a bank....

i trained people not to have "bigboobs99" as a user name on third party, because you're going to move jobs in your life and you sure don't need that on the end of your resume (we used to snicker) on selection panels because people didn't think ahead......

It's normal for apps to have this allowance.

It's the apps that want access to play store payments and the ones with advert banners (these redirect you to the standard omg you have a virus pay to remove) that worry me - Sickipedia being one and the free to play games (if anyone still plays games on phones).

If you don't want anyone spying, then cut yourself off like Gene Hackman in Enemy of the State. It's the only way.

Also, disable your webcam if your using a laptop - don't just software disable, pull your screen apart and physically unplug it.
You'll find that when you disable it it magically re-appears... now that is some funked up sh1t.

almost any android app requires insane permissions. the requirements for this facebook app might seem excessive, but the majority of apps requires a whole more access to your hardware and data.

That's the worst thing about Android - app permissions. Even the most basic applications demand near-ownership of your device. There are ways to mitigate this, but you often lose some functionality in the process.

It's not always completely clear what a given permission entails. The entire issue needs to be simplified and standardised, plus, the ability to grant or deny permissions for individual apps is needed - without requiring root.
