Can't believe people still think it's 1 even after the order of operation was posted. For those people who need links.

Uhhhh.... In the order of operations multiplication and division have the same priority Jack you find your answer by going left to right when you come to a situation where you can either divide or multiply.
I can't believe you think you are more intelligent than others.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32358435

You are a 100% correct.

parentheses first

now we have 3/1(3)

Multiplication and division left to right.

Now we have 3(3)

x=9
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32269532

The 1(3) needs to be calculated first due to the () signs (it's short hand for 1x(3)).

So it's x=3/3 thus 1.

On the computer now.

3 3 3
--------- = ---------- = ----- = 1
1(1+2) 1(3) 3

x=1

Doubt it will do it on here too.

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
The answer is that its a poorly written equation and the answer depends upon your interpretation.

I would say the answer is 1, because I see the equation as

3
---
1(1+2)

Those who say the answer is 9 are interpreting it as:

3
---(1+2)
1

Operations in the () go first.
A single number just means multiply. In this case Mupltiply and division go left to right.

For the ones who says it's 9, did you even take algebra? And if you did, were you listening in class?

It doesn't matter that your calculator says it's 9. That's why in school you are taught to do these problems with pencil and paper. There is a proper way to do an algebraic equation and when you do, the answer is 1. The guy on the first page explains it very well.

i can't believe people have to argue about this.
i can't believe this question gets posted regularly.
i can't believe some people actually can't work out the equation.

it's 1... this is basic algebra. kids aged ten need to be able to solve this, if they want to pass their grade.

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
3/1(1+2) = x

It's just the faulty matrix that we've been programmed with, like multiplying something or dividing something by zero.

sorry, but if there are seven thousand galaxies, and I decide to multiply that (forget the reason) by a zero galaxy whatever that is, well, that doesn't void all those galaxies out of existence does it?

same here. unshackle your mind from what you were taught when you were just a stupid kid and order of operations and all that stupid nonsense.

the first bit of nonsense is having 1 multiplied against something. what's the point? stupid, if you ask me. so the equation becomes:

3/(1+2)

now you just get three divided by three, unless you want to go some cockamamie route you could even say three divided by one is three, plus three divided by two, but that's really nonsensical. 1.

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
The people who think the answer is 9 are forgetting that the () dont disappear after adding the 1 and 3

After adding the one and three the equation still looks like this:

3/1(3)=x

You still have parentheses to deal with and they still come first.

OP, you're a troll. Notice how few people so far have given the correct answer so far? Because all the intelligent people that can do basic math have already made their argument in the other math thread (which you so ingeniously reformatted into your own stupidity) and are tired of trying to educate the feeble minded.

I'll take a crack at explaining it for all you 1tards.

Math is math, it's not open to interpretation. There's only one right answer and one way of solving the equation.

BEDMAS, PEMDAS or whatever other abbreviation you use for the order of operations, still operates from left to right.

First you do the brackets from left to right,
then you do the exponents from left to right,
then multiplication and division in order from left to right
and finally addition and subtraction in order from left to right.

Get it? You reread the equation from left to right after completing each of the orders of operation.

It's 9. ALL the time.
