For those people who need links. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32269532 [link to mathforum.org] Uhhhh.... In the order of operations multiplication and division have the same priority Jack you find your answer by going left to right when you come to a situation where you can either divide or multiply. I can't believe you think you are more intelligent than others. You are a 100% correct. parentheses first now we have 3/1(3) Multiplication and division left to right. Now we have 3(3) x=9 The 1(3) needs to be calculated first due to the () signs (it's short hand for 1x(3)). So it's x=3/3 thus 1. |

In this case Mupltiply and division go left to right. |

It doesn't matter that your calculator says it's 9. That's why in school you are taught to do these problems with pencil and paper. There is a proper way to do an algebraic equation and when you do, the answer is 1. The guy on the first page explains it very well. When you're in church don't forget to ask for forgiveness. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 25480060 South Korea 01/20/2013 10:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 3/1(1+2) = x It's just the faulty matrix that we've been programmed with, like multiplying something or dividing something by zero. sorry, but if there are seven thousand galaxies, and I decide to multiply that (forget the reason) by a zero galaxy whatever that is, well, that doesn't void all those galaxies out of existence does it? same here. unshackle your mind from what you were taught when you were just a stupid kid and order of operations and all that stupid nonsense. the first bit of nonsense is having 1 multiplied against something. what's the point? stupid, if you ask me. so the equation becomes: 3/(1+2) now you just get three divided by three, unless you want to go some cockamamie route you could even say three divided by one is three, plus three divided by two, but that's really nonsensical. 1. |

CalmShock User ID: 5056346 Canada 01/20/2013 12:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll take a crack at explaining it for all you 1tards. Math is math, it's not open to interpretation. There's only one right answer and one way of solving the equation. BEDMAS, PEMDAS or whatever other abbreviation you use for the order of operations, still operates from left to right. First you do the brackets from left to right, then you do the exponents from left to right, then multiplication and division in order from left to right and finally addition and subtraction in order from left to right. Get it? You reread the equation from left to right after completing each of the orders of operation. It's 9. ALL the time. Patience is a virtue I just can't wait to achieve - CalmShock |
