Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
with distributive property it is x=1

3/
1(1+2)

1*1
+
1*2
= 3

3/3=1

Solve the Equation: copy and paste

Answer:

x=9

Yes but, just because a web site got a backend crap code and show you 9 as result, does not means that its right.

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
The answer is 9

once again think BEDMAS or PEDMAS however you wanna pronounce it

3/1(2+1)

brackets first = 3/1(3)

exponents = there are none, 3/1(3)

division = 3/1(3) = 3(3)

multiplication = 3(3) = 9

once again the answer is 9....i dont see how you could get 1...just use ORDER OF OPERATIONS

Whoops my bad, the answer is 1

using BEDMAS going left to right

brackets first, not division = 3/1(3)

no exponents

multiplication 3/1(3) = 3/3

division 3/3=1

WOW im a moron....lol

i guess it depends on if one multiplies first or divides first..

using BEDMAS the answer is 9

using BEMDAS with is not even the correct order of operations, which is how some people were calculating it, including me

So my first post was almost correct, not the second one

the answer is 9

using BEDMAS going left to right

brackets first, not division = 3/1(3)

no exponents

division 3/1(3)=3(3)

multiplication 3(3) = 9

that looks a little better

You Ninetards need to remember the brackets don't disappear after you add the numbers inside.

The brackets remain... so you need to divide first.

3/1(1+2)=x

Do the brackets first 3/1(3)=x
But you still have brackets... so they are first

you have to multiply 1 and 3...
leaving you with 3/3= 1

I remember getting stuck in math a little because the teacher could never really answer why it was always x.

It really bothered me that she would use a+b=x and I couldn't get my head around why the x was so prominent.

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
You didn't take your own advice.

3 / 1 x 3

All that's left is mult and divide so you go in order form left to right

3/1= 3 x 3 = 9

3/1(1+2) = x

YOU tell me please.

:hmmm:

Follow the rules known as the "Order of Operations":

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

3/1(1+2) = x

Perform operations inside parentheses first.

1+2 = 3

so, 3/1(3) = x

Perform multiplication from left to right.

1(3) = 3

so, 3/3 = x

Perform division from left to right.

3/3 = 1

so, x = 1

Here is a link to a page that helps to illustrate how to solve mathematics equations employing the rules known as the "Order of Operations":

Yes they do. Once you do the equation within the parenthesis, it's now part of the remaining equation.

Even though the 3 remains in brackets, division and multiplication are still done in order from left to right. the 1 is not in the brackets, therefore it's divided into 3 first, THEN you do the multiplication...

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
how can you utter idiots argue about such a simple thing?!?

how is it even possible that some handheld calculators and online calculators do this the wrong way?!?

3/1(1+2)
equals 3/(1*(1+2)) = 1
does not equal (3/1)*(1+2) = 3

funny thing is, if you put "3/1(1+2) = x" in wolfram alpha, it does it the wrong way: [link to www.wolframalpha.com]

Exactly. Pemdas, the p stands for parenthesis. (1+2) would have to be solved first.

Concerning multiplication and division, those don't have to be done in a certain order, you just go from left to right then. Same with addition and subtraction. Though multiplication and division come before addition and subtraction. Or from what I remember.

Parenthesis first. So 3/1(3), rewritten is 3 / 1 * 3

Division and multiplication you go left to right, so

3/1 = 3 * 3 = 9

OP, you're a troll. Notice how few people so far have given the correct answer so far? Because all the intelligent people that can do basic math have already made their argument in the other math thread (which you so ingeniously reformatted into your own stupidity) and are tired of trying to educate the feeble minded.

I'll take a crack at explaining it for all you 1tards.

Math is math, it's not open to interpretation. There's only one right answer and one way of solving the equation.

BEDMAS, PEMDAS or whatever other abbreviation you use for the order of operations, still operates from left to right.

First you do the brackets from left to right,
then you do the exponents from left to right,
then multiplication and division in order from left to right
and finally addition and subtraction in order from left to right.

Get it? You reread the equation from left to right after completing each of the orders of operation.

It's 9. ALL the time.
 Quoting: CalmShock

Funny how the posters that came up with 1 have concluded that anyone that believes the answer is 9 are complete idiots. Yes the answer is 9. Like you said all the time.
