Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
Ok I am back from church. I should have prayed for us 9 tards also. Last time.

New link

[link to www.mathgoodies.com]

The original problem one more time.

3/1(1+2) = x

Parentheses first.

3/1(3) As in we take from the original problem (1+2) and no that equals 3. So now we have 3/1*3.

Notice no more parentheses.

Now we do multiplication and division left to right. The first one on the right is division. So, lets do that first. 3/1=3. And for those with a science calculators: If Johnny had 3 apples and divided them amongst himself 1, how many apples does Johnny have.

Now the new problem after the division is now 3*3.

And what is 3*3.

Well after all it is a conspiracy site so it must be 1.

if you truly think it is 9, you are wrong. Yes multiplication and division get the same priority, but once thats all that is left, you MUST go left to right. therefore the correct answer is x=1.iamwith

3/1(1+2) = x
3/1(3)=x
*3 *3 <- Multiply by 3
1(3)=3x
3=3x
- - <-Divide by 3
3 3

1=x or x=1 is the correct solution.

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
what it comes down to is that some people interpret the expression as:

3/1*(1+2)

and some people interpret it as

3/1/(1+2)

obviously two things next to each other with no sign is a multiplication, not a division

Follow the rules known as the "Order of Operations":

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

3/1(1+2) = x

Perform operations inside parentheses first.

1+2 = 3

so, 3/1(3) = x

Perform multiplication from left to right.

1(3) = 3

so, 3/3 = x

Perform division from left to right.

3/3 = 1

so, x = 1

Here is a link to a page that helps to illustrate how to solve mathematics equations employing the rules known as the "Order of Operations":

The answer is that its a poorly written equation and the answer depends upon your interpretation.

I would say the answer is 1, because I see the equation as

3
---
1(1+2)

Those who say the answer is 9 are interpreting it as:

3
---(1+2)
1
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21687950

Exactly. It's a very poorly written equation and exploits a slight ambiguity in the order of operations. After parenthesis (brackets for you brits) and exponents (powers) it is then MULTIPLICATION and then division.

However, the ambiguity comes in that multiplication and division are seen as being "on the same level" and so those CAN be done left to right.

Real answer: both are right.

And some of you are REALLY some argumentative, know-it-all shitheads for thinking YOUR way, and ONLY YOUR WAY is the right one.

Just saying....

Multiplication and division have the same priority from left to right.

Using your logic, addition should be done before subtraction in an equation...

Now you blame the equation saying it's poorly written?

It's a math equation you dumb fuck. It doesn't have spelling or grammatical errors.

and another thing... MY way and ONLY my way is the right way. This isn't a fucking thesis on migrating birds. it's math. 1+1 =2. There's only one right answer.

There is no great import to the answer to this question.

Just pick a set of operator priorities, and a left to right or right to left or inside to outside execution priority, and use that when you pose the problem, as well as when you compute the solution.

All will be well.

Be happy.

The 1 isn't inside the parenthesis you stupid fuck. Once you complete the equation inside the parenthesis, you work left to right doing the division then the multiplication.

It's not "parenthesis and everything around it" first.

Now drink some bleach and kindly remove yourself from the gene pool.

The reason for this is that when a web browser reads a HTML page with multiple spaces in a row, it displays that HTML as one space.

For example, these lines will probably look the same when you read the message, but if you quote this message, you can see that one line has more spaces than the other line:

x x

x x

Multiple spaces don't show up in HTML! You can't format things with spaces!

Here are those two lines again, but with each space replaced by a dot:

x........................................x

x.x

Calmshock, while your answer is correct, your tact towards those that are confused seems to be lacking but I will help argue the point as well.

First we have the initial equation:

3/1(1+2) = x

We need to work out the items inside the parentheses. IMPORTANT! By doing this, we clear the item of the parentheses as it has been fully worked out into a single solution:

3/1 x 3 = x

Then we work division OR multiplication from left to right:

3 x 3 = x

Next finish the equation:

9 = x OR x = 9
