Occam's Razor:
A psychotic 20 year old 'outcast', undoubtedly hopped up on drugs [er, meds] got so paranoid and pissed off he killed his semi-crazy mom, then went to a nearby elementary school, and killed the head mistress, a couple of teachers and a classroom full of 1st graders before killing himself when he ralized the police had shown up.
1) The kid came from a dysfunctional and broken family; financially well off and well educated but dysfunctional never-the-less.
2) By every account given of him, he obviously had at the very least high functioning Autism or Asperger's. He may well have had an additional psychiatric issue, including possibly a so-called personality disorder, possibly even the somewhat early onset of schizophrenia.
3) One very unusual aspect is his mom was a firearm's collector [that's fine], but she apparently didn't secure them so her batshit crazy son could get his hands on them. Not only that, she took him target practicing. Way to go,mom...R.I.P.
4) His only brother hadn't spoken to him in 2 years [!], and his dad was estranged. How a dad becomes estranged from his mentally ill 20 year old son I have difficulty in understanding. But it sounds like his old man just threw $ at his ex-wife [Adam's mom] to take care of the problem. Pretty typical of people in the socioeconomic background, actually.

A 6 foot 120 pound geek is wearing a tactical vest that only fits 180 pound men. He has 12 18oz 30 round mags flapping against his thighs, 2 handguns and their mags "somewhere" in there as well, as he stumbles through a jagged hole in a glass door.
He begins firing from an AR-15 in an enclosed area with no carpeting to dampen the acoustics, and even wearing earplugs, immediately goes deaf from the 165 decibel explosions. People are NOT running toward him trying to "stop" him with their bodies (Occam's razor), but fleeing, hiding, maybe throwing items at him. This untrained wimp is firing madly, and after 20 rounds begins to become seriously disoriented as his deafness becomes painful. He is stumbling trying to keep his aim straight while maneuvering around desks and fallen items.
He stops to reload. Begins firing again at someone he sees running out the door trying to escape. With each report of the rifle his head throbs, the acrid cordite burns his throat.
Next, with no motive, he seeks out a classroom full of tiny children and turns his brain to mush after firing another magazine of 30 rounds, missing his targets wildly as they scatter screaming and running hither and tither.
He passes out.
