They went trapping too.. they didn't get anything.. first time. But set traps up, whole nine yards.

Just keep it natural stuff such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, etc. Use just you Earth under your feet.

There's no needed to traps/rude killing anything.

We are in the second millennium.

A survival handbook and local field guide are good places to start.
While I am comfortable/experienced with the climate, flora and fauna around here, I am ignorant to the issues a desert climate presents.

This is a good book.

go to utube and search on bushcraft or fire making or tarp tent. there are a ton of good videos on there. better yet subscribe to them and they'll pop into your utube 'inbox'.

And yet we still have dumb shits like you..

Oh please..it's was survival camping, not yoga class. And there's not many fruits an nuts in the dead of winter, in the woods..Guess they could have taken some trail mix.

I thank my lucky stars I've got a background in backpacking and wilderness canoe tripping.....

That's nice an all, just find a tomato garden to set up camp in..

Ok well I have been watching you tube on a lot of things but to go out and survive on the land is never a good idea to do it alone. U might know a lot. But u never know what could happen. That is why I am looking for a friend or friends to go with. And not the broke back mountain crap.

I have a tent but I want to learn more about building shelters.

You can use cactus in the desert for the solar still. Bust some cacti open with some rocks and put them in the still. The moisture in the cacti will condensate. You'd probably have to make a few stills to get any meaningful results in the desert though.

Well, that is quite a bit of force the awning has to contend with but yeah, you'd think that it should have been designed for such human type errors.

A couple days without food and you would be eating the shit out of a squirrels asshole.

Arizona, with the number of people who now live there, is NOT a good place for survival camping if TSHTF.

Why?

WATER!! or rather the lack thereof.

Within a couple of weeks of water no longer being delivered by Arizona's sophisticated water transfer technology EVERY cactus and hand pumpable well within easy driving distance of the big cities WILL have been tapped for water, and every flowing stream will be stressed by both water withdrawals AND human sewage getting into them and polluting them.

WATER is more important than food ... and in the desert climates will be much more important, at least initially (until a huge die off occures from lack of water).

Densly populated DRY areas (those without large surface water resources) should be avoided like the plague if one is trying to survive using survival camping techniques.

Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and parts of California could be as bad off as Arizona, though of those states Utah would probably fare the best because the Mormon Church will step in to assist or even substitute for the government if a real crisis were to occure there.

Remember NO ELECTRICITY ... then MOST high volume water delivery systems are SHUT DOWN!! (NYC is the one large city exception - it is a gravity flow system for water up to about the 10th floor of most buildings as well as all street level fire hydrants)

For "Survival Camping" you have to keep your pack light.


If you load it down with traps then your getting into sustainability not survival.


Do you want to live out of a backpack ?



The most you should carry is a small pocket fishing kit so you can catch a fish.


All your other food should be dehydrated.


You need a Stove to boil some water.

I like to carry a filter too so I can purify my water.


Then you need outdoor clothes. This is very specific, if you think normal cotton will work outdoors you may end up dead. You want wool and synthetics.


My entire hiking backpack 16 pounds of baseweight.


That means without water and food all my gear is only 16 pounds.

That includes a hammock with a underquilt, topquilt both of down and a tarp that blocks all the wind. Also a spare set of clothes and raingear. And all the little things you need like a fire starter rod, compass, headlamps, water bladder, cook pots, latrine kit, even more spare wool socks.

Nothing I have is cotton, because cotton holds moisture while wool and synthetics wick it away.


My baselayer is wool.


My Fleece insulation layers are synthetic fleece.

My Outerlayers are rugged quick drying synthetics.



When I get to camp I can change out of Hiking clothes and put a clean set of camp clothes on. Fresh socks and fresh baselayer, then if its cold I have down camp clothes that I also sleep in. Along with a down hat and some fleece gloves.


The first thing that will kill you in a survival situation is Exposure.


Your clothes are your first layer of defense.


When camping I dont sit by a campfire. I hang in my hammock covered by a tarp with a down quilt hanging under me and a down quilt on top of me while I have wool underwear on with a down suit on under that.

No broke back mountain stuff? Then don't expect many guys to join you.

I used to live out there in Yavapai county. There is a guy in Prescott who is nationally known for survival classes. His name is Cody Lundin not sure if that is how his name is spelled but from what I have seen spelling doesn't mean much on GLP. Anyway look him up. He teaches classes at Yavapai college as well that is probably the cheapest way to get into a class of his. Good Luck.

Also research Tom Brown's Tracker school. And stay away from REI.
