Perhaps a good thing to try out. Everything you need to know to start up is included in this link along with contact info if you are so interested. A good read for computer geeks.

Pretty cool. In densely populated areas I could imagine a vast interconnected chain.

Yes, exactly. It has a lot of potential for more secure communication within groups of people.

Re: Is A Pirate Box One Answer To Internet Freedom?
The internet is essentially a set of Servers, PCs and routers connected by a communications protocol known as TCP IP whe re TCP = Terminal Control Program and IP = Internet protocol.

It is not impossible to create an 'alternative' internet as a 'hidden' layer within the current internet. Sort of an internet within an internet.

It would not be particularly fast, but it would be fairly easy to re-hash open source software to create it.

If it were also to encapsulate, simple PKI based encryption it would make censorship difficult as well.

All it needs is a few pioneers and some funding.

Yes, there is a great potential for development that could arise out of this pirate box innovation. Perhaps a possibility for new start up companies???? I really don't have a super tech head, but it isn't too difficult to see future possibilities.
