Pi, Buddha came to enlightenment through the path of suffering. Suffering is not what enlightened him, but it was a necessary experience for him to have so he could understand how to reach Nirvana. And, for Buddha, much of it was a self-inflicted type of suffering. At the time, it was in fad.
