No video streaming lately, buffering and buffering. Since two nights ago. Found wired things starting up in my system Facebook program. Never installed a thing from them but it was in my computers startup list. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17875044 I'm in Houston and while the cable seems fine, the internet has been slow as of lately and my laptop as well. Eek! Occam's Razor, morans! |

I sat in an office and activated modems remotely and made sure shit got done on time... blah blah My clients werent home users but companies... we're talking T1 and T3's I can assure you... the services offered were so shitty they 90% of the time our internet didnt work... People would ask me how well it worked... I wanted to tell them they would be better off writing on a rock and throwing it out their window... about the same difference in service quality... but whats scary is that AT&T owns the main internet line in the US... the "Backbone" All other companies lease from AT&T... I do mean all... so all ur net comes from AT&T... without their backbone... the net wouldnt work... so if that goes down... kiss it all goodbye... _______________________ |

I've always wondered who the "gatekeeper" of the internet was, so to speak. I knew that Comcast was not the direct connection, that they lease from someone else, but I had no idea it was AT&T. I've never been able to find any reliable information on that. Recently I decided I wanted a more in depth understanding of how the internet works and started by googling around, but couldn't find anything beyond an overview with some diagrams. I want the who, not just the how. |

I want the who, not just the how. "Gatekeeper" and "Keymaster" are job titles at AT&T lol The Gatekeepers are pretty much high level tech support and keymasters set up T1 routers to be shipped to work with the T1 order... But yep AT&T runs it all. Everyone else leases from them. That made it a pain in the ass to set up AT&T T1 connections in (for example) Verizon territory... they hated setting up the physical connections... guess they were bitter about leasing from AT&T? i dont know I spent many an hour cussing Verizon's employees because they were acting like little bitches. ...but where does AT&T get it from oh... i used to log onto the backbone and look at the connection. it was pretty cool to see the internet data flow in real time. what cities were using the most etc sometimes you had to log in and see what was fucking up the clients connection... you also use it to directly access and take control of the clients net... couldnt fuck with it though... as soon as you log in... they know it... if you tried to fuck with it you would be arrested. i signed some paperwork that pretty much said... "fucking with the backbone = life in jail" lol lol Last Edited by Dr. Acula on 01/22/2013 04:11 AM _______________________ |

ROF Roswell, GA User ID: 32800392 United States 01/22/2013 08:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Living in north Atlanta, all uverse services are down. I called their help desk and got a recorded message saying that some customers are affected by an outage. To get more information, wait time was too long plus they jack up the volume on some old horrid music while you are on hold so that you will not stay on hold - and I did drop & found these posts. I am an old retired BellSouth guy who now gets ATT retired old guy benefits and they are about as unreliable as the uverse service! WonderBoy |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27007810 United States 01/22/2013 10:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I still have no service, survived that god awful hold music AT&T has. After 22 minutes a tech support rep picked up and told me there was an outage. A pissed off me (acting mad) was transferred to a "support supervisor". Again, this other person said outage. I asked what caused the outage, she said she didn't know but most likely "a simple issue of servers not able to connect to clients". I asked her to elaborate. She reworded her initial answer. The GLP in me asked her if it could be the sun. She said there was "no way" the sun could impact their services. I laughed. She giggled. I then asked if it could be the government taking over their servers to test people's reaction to an outage. She assured me that the government had nothing to do with this because other providers would be targeted by the government also. I told her they can kill two birds with one stone since AT&T provided Internet to other ISP's. She stayed quiet for a moment... "I never saw it that way, but I will look into that". Either she was saving our recorded call or she is now a converted GLP'er. No ETA on service restoration. Yes, I know. "Cool story bro". But true. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 32805254 United States 01/22/2013 10:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | McKinney Texas here and Uverse and internet were both down yesterday from about 1:30pm CST til this morning. Gateway wasn't getting a solid green Service light. It would try, blink for a while, then go red, then go completely off. |
