Thanks for the post I have been wondering how much bleach to put in my 2 loiter bottles now I know how much since they hold half gallon of water.

That is a good thing to have, remember that this may not kill certain parasite eggs and it will not remove chemical contaminants from dirty water.

Calcium hypochlorite is one of the best chemical disinfectants for water, better than household bleach by far. It destroys a variety of disease causing organisms including bacteria, yeast, fungus, spores, and viruses.

Calcium Hypochlorite is widely available for use as swimming pool chlorine tablets or white powder that is much more stable than chlorine. This is often known as “pool shock”.
How to Disinfect Water Using Calcium Hypochlorite

Using granular calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water is a two step process.

* To make a stock of chlorine solution (do not drink this!) dissolve 1 heaping teaspoon (about one-quarter of an ounce) of high-test (78%) granular calcium hypochlorite for each two gallons (eight liters) of water.
* To disinfect water add one part of the chlorine solution to 100 parts water to be treated.
* Let the mixture sit for at least one-half hour before drinking.

Be sure to obtain the dry granular calcium hypochlorite since once it is made into a liquid solution it will begin to degrade and eventually become useless as a disinfecting agent. This also means you should make your treated drinking water in small batches, for example enough for a few weeks at a time at most.

Another plus for using calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water for emergency use is that a little goes a very long way. A 1-pound bag of calcium hypochlorite in granular form typically costs only a few US dollars and can be obtained in any swimming pool supply section of your hardware store or online. This amount will treat up to 10,000 gallons of drinking water, which is enough for a family of four for some six or seven years at a gallon per day per person!

Calcium hypochlorite will store for a long period of time and remain effective as a chemical drinking water treatment. So get rid of the household bleach and buy a can of Calcium hypochlorite for your disaster emergency water disinfection needs. It lasts far longer and treats far more water than the traditional chlorine bleach water disinfection treatment.

Store in a ziplock baggie or a glass jar without a metal lid. This can not touch metal as it is corrosive. Indefinite shelf life.

Great advice, the Steri-pen is great and for most applications will work excellent. I use that for camping.

Nice thread thanks for sharing, already have the information in 1000's of survival e-books I have backed-up, but this information should help people out who're unsure of where to get started and whats most vital to have.

Yes you bring up a good point.
This is not intended to be the end all informational thread on water, That would be impossible.

This is just to get people thinking and give some simple and easy ways to store some away or some simple ways to kill the bugs in your pond water out back. It will take anyone just understanding the need for this some time to read a few survival books and study up on the subject.

That is a very expensive option and not really worth it in my opinion. I assume over a grand to get it installed.

For a full time well without electricity (Like the Amish) that is a great option, just not money well spent for the average joe.

The Well Bucket will Do the same thing in an emergency, and only is a few bucks in parts.

Sure if you treat it or filter it you can go ahead and drink all the toilet water you want, if that's your thing..

Guy next door to me, who is 83 years old, buried a 500 gallon tank in his backyard and has a system where all his gutter water goes into the tank. Pretty freaking elaborate system. He hooked all the downspouts into one main PVC pipe which is buried and flows into the tank. Then he has an overflow system made out of PVC that flows the excess back into the street. This guy even had someone come out and cut a section of the curb out so the pipe fits perfect and a J pipe pipe to get the water past the cut section of the curb so it doesnt flow back into his yard. All perfectly legal, how I dont know. And he hooked a sump pump onto it and uses this system to water his grass and garden.

This guy is the ultimate prepper. He has a 13,500 watt propane generator that he rigged to power into his main circuit breaker. Didnt even know they made those.

Its funny to talk about prepping to him, he always talks about "those god damn japs", lol. He swears they're simply regrouping and plan to come back and attack soon. He says he's ready for them this time.

I know it's not feasible for everyone, but a katadyn water filter will allow you to get water from just about anywhere. I'd still boil any standing water that looks infested, but even that is supposed to be drinkable from a katadyn. They are good for filtering 13,000 gallons, more than anyone should need for many, many years. $300.

Worth checking out, same micron size filter as the katadyn I was told by Berkey. I have both for backpacking. And, of course, if TSHTF.

Just horde it in glass bottles....the taste is horrible after 2 months in plastic containers.
