I have an old Obstetrics textbook. Apparently in the early 50's- women in labor were given scope. They also were fitted with football helmet type gear to protect them from self injury.
So in effect, they felt all the pain of childbirth but did not recall anything about the experience later. Often the baby had to be removed by forceps as mom was so out of it.

There are historical accounts of this drug being used in connection to assinations. There is evidence that each of the last three shooters were in treatment for psychiatric conditions. This drug is being used to treat some types of psychiatric illness. Thats a pretty good connection. Check out some of the links above before you blow your whole red herring allowance.
