what's really happening is that the insurgents are trying
to take control of the whole Eastern half of Southern Mali.

and what is notable in this conflict is that evidently
there are large numbers of people in Mali who
don't want the Islamics to take over the country.

(and this is the basic reason why France is intervening)

Yup. on Jan 14 France went into Mali with a thousand troops,
and now they're trying to suck the rest of NATO in with them,
and they are succeeding :)
