What is the soul?
People who are scientifically minded discount the soul. For them, the word has no meaning, because they have no frame of reference.

Frame of reference is
“a set of ideas, conditions, or assumptions that determine how something will be approached, perceived, or understood “

[link to www.merriam-webster.com]
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Since they don't believe that spirituality is a valid way to look at the Universe, they discount (reduce its worth) the word soul, for that word implies spirituality. That circuitous thinking impedes them from accepting it exists.

A soul is being. It is the being that occupies your body and may also exist in a timeless measureless way.

Physicists believe that there may be ten dimensions. Since the body can only exist in three dimensions, we may not be able to perceive the soul.

Imagine you could see all of your life from conception to death at once. That would be perceiving your life in four dimensions. The dizzying flurry of information would overwhelm the intellect, wouldn't it? It would stun you.

Sometimes, something happens to us medically. We harm the body so much, that consciousness leaves the body. That consciousness often has a Near Death Experience (NDE).

That consciousness is probably the soul.

The Soul is nothing more than the spirit that inhabits the body. Your soul most likely slowly perceives information that the brain is measuring. I think that measurement and recording of information is the intellect.

The intellect communicates to the Soul. The Soul then says, “Well when that happened before, you did this. That worked or didn't work. Why not try this?”

The Soul is trying to communicate with you, but also tried to discover what “being” means. This search for “being” is the meaning of Life.

One definition of God is...the Source of All Being. In other words, God is Ultimate Reality. From God, one aspect is that God creates all being and so from God comes all reality. God lends being to all things.

In other words, God EXISTS and hence you exist.

This is why your soul (consciousness) searches for the nature of reality.

Re: What is the soul?
the spirit- in days gone by people would visit the local "spirits" and drink themselves into a slumber therefore "letting go" so to speak or "let it all hang out" . More specifically "sin". Therefore allowing the "evil" spirits to enter into them.

Jesus released the spirits who then entered the swine who then ran off a cliff.

the soul is what the devil "satan" desires, this is you, you do not have a soul, you are a soul, you "have" a body which contains you "your soul". The body is the "temple of God", you are the soul in the temple. You can thank Jesus for that, he opened the door for you to have direct communion with God. If you so choose to .
So to the best of my ability to describe my understanding of what a soul is; "it is you"!

A soul is that part of you that will continue to exist after you die for eternity, in "hell" if you are not covered by the Blood.

A Christian is literally re-born of the Holy Spirit their soul becoming part of the Divine is the only way I can explain my belief. How this happens I don't know but I do trust the corpus of scripture that explains the mystery. And it is great.

it is your own source or connection to information....like our solar system relies on the sun.....your body relies on your soul. It is your own personal power its the first step from void to form....your soul is YOU and ego real ego is what further defines you to be an individual....so embrace all you are and know the difference between tools and creation.

If anyone would like to see a concise history of what humanity believed about the process of a human acquiring a soul, here's an article.

Note the commonality of belief that a soul enters within the womb, and often around the time of 40 days.
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

It's also called "quickening".

I'm a Christian and also educated and so I have beliefs. That doesn't mean they're true or false. Only Ultimate Reality knows Truth not me.

It is interesting, and I agree, "We are souls." We inhabit bodies. The essence of us is the soul.

I don't know what it is. I've read and speculated. I have faith it exists in a form that connects us back in some manner, to those we have loved here. It makes me very sad to think it may end after death. Though I do believe it is present during life.

Re: What is the soul?

There was a neuroscientist who had a terrible case of bacterial meningitis. The infection became all pervasive and white blood cells by the millions came and released chemical agents to kill the bacteria and then died. His brain was entirely coated with pus. Then he went into brain death and there was no activity. His intellect was gone.
[link to www.lifebeyonddeath.net]

And yet, he recovered and recounted that he had very complex dreams for many days. That's impossible from what we know of science for the brain was too damaged to have higher order thinking.

I think he came face to face with his consciousness or soul, and that likely the soul doesn't die, only is released from this shell we inhabit during Life.

Something mysterious exists beyond this world and this Life.

you can check HER/IT... it is your intimate desire (you know or dont know of) but is driving your trough your life, serving interactions, shifting your mind to better evaluation of morals and their impact (your future influence in creation)

she/it is working (growing in influence) from inside out in a SET time window (life span) with/in you!

then they give meaning trough their relations between each other - the relation is in the movement & colors,

Re: What is the soul?
If life persists then, once we die, we are literally consciousness that has been liberated from the body.

Imagine that you are a soul that exists timelessly in many dimensions at once. We think that there are ten dimensions, but that our bodies exists in the three dimensions of : height, length, and width. It might be that our bodies exist in ten dimensions simultaneously, but we can't perceive that.
[link to www.superstringtheory.com]

To imagine the body in four dimensions is difficult, for all of those cells switch out as they grow and then are discarded through that dynamic process. And yet, we intuit a sense of continuity of the self. That continuity is partially the soul.
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

If time is the four dimension, then imagine you could see yourself from life to birth as a being being conceived all the way through to your death and release from the body, and then all at once. The information would overload or overwhelm you. It would be too much information.

What if the soul if the summation that we cannot perceive because our mind is only the intellect?

Imagine the intellect as that momentary awareness of data that comes from the senses. You sense heat, vibration, position in space, hear something, taste something, tactilely sense movement, smell a flower, see a color, etc. All of that goes to your momentary intellect and is reported. Then somehow that information is cataloged.
[link to www.scientificamerican.com]

Cataloged data is a memory. It could be that the arrangement of white matter in the brain is the storage place of memory. It could that neurons in a certain order not only transmits a signal to another neuron, but could be memories too. It might be that the sequence of DNA is used to encode data as well:
[link to www.techspot.com]
[link to www.neatorama.com]

It's entirely possible that once you smelled a gardenia. That smell is recorded as data. Then whenever you smell a gardenia again, that memory is accessed and the intellect notes: “Gardenia smell”. The brain might conserve memories, in fact I think this is so. You're 16, you take a girl on a date. She's very beautiful, wearing a white dress with a floral pattern and a perfume with Gardenia notes in it. Your intellect pulls from data in the brain for all of that. She isn't a Gardenia. She doesn't look like a Gardenia, but her smell is partially from a Gardenia. So your intellect notes: Gardenia smell, and you associate all of her data as well as that in an instant.

This causes a cascade of memories to constantly be generated and why we think the way we do by a plethora of associations of memories.

What if the intellect then is working with the soul? The soul has continuity of Self since it exists in a timeless way. In a way, that's about the summation of memories, isn't it?

Maybe true analysis of all the intellect is done by the soul. The intellect wants more information, it's the thirst for knowledge, but the soul has access everything that you know at once and then communicates to the intellect to tell us, “Say that girl in that dress. She is really special and not like the other girls you have met. Be on your best behavior. She's important. You're going to marry her someday.”

This is what I think the soul is. It's the timeless spirit that knows us at 3 as well as at age 77. But our intellect can't handle that.
