You sound deeply depressed. I hope you'll go find a therapist to voice some of your ideas and find a medication that will work for you. I don't believe in long term use of SSRIs, but in the short term, they can restore your serotonin levels. You're sound very low from what you wrote.

Unfortunately SSRI's can be highly addictive and side effects can create increased suicidal thoughts, anxiety/nervousness, agitation, feelings of desensitization, a numbing effect on your emotions (good & bad), sexual dysfunction, among other ailments... Withdrawal symptoms can be unpleasant and harmful to the individual as well. From my experience I would make it a point to explore all other options/methods for raising one's mood before even considering psychotropic drugs (SSRI's) that alter/affect your brain chemistry - as they are quite dangerous and as you indicated, never a long term option. By other options I would first recommend - modifying diet/nutrition, exercise, life-style changes, natural/herbal supplements, detoxing, checking for vitamin deficiencies, etc.

I agree provisionally. In cases of severe depression, SSRIs and the newer SNRI (they boost serotonin and norepinephrine) are used to quickly get the person more balanced. I don't recommend them for more than a month. The people on them have to be carefully monitored.

Norepinephrine is given because it increases drive and some severely depressed suicidal folks stop taking baths, won't get out of bed, and they decline rapidly.

SSRIs were NEVER MEANT AS A LONG TERM SOLUTION. We have people taking them for years sometimes decade. That's wrong.

A way to naturally boost serotonin in almost an equal way is St. John's Wort, but someone in crisis needs medical supervision and medicine and therapy.

Note 95% of what I mentioned is about hard work. That will boost testosterone and will offer a feeling of well being as well as personal satisfaction as well as fresh air and usually snaps people out of it.
