Quality idea. A few idiots give us sensible drink drivers a bad name. It's pretty fucking easy not to crash a car.

As much as it pains me to agree with something which can be potentially deadly to the innocent I am inclined to agree that some people can drive incredibly well, when drunk. My cousin can be completely wankered but it switches straight off when he gets into a car. He hasn't done it for years, since he got more responsible but some people have driving as an instinct.

The problem I see with it ever being legal is that lots of people have no control over their vehicles when off their heads.

such a stupid idea, they campaign for years to stop drink driving and now they want them to start drink driving again. I drink in the comfort of my own home rather than go to the pub, I live in rural Ireland. Its been bet into me for years not to drink drive, people have lost their licence, lost their jobs, lost their lives because of drink driving, and now its ok to do it???.

The arbitery limits set by the government are meaningless. Back in the day if the plice followed you out the pub and saw you get into the car they sould follow you home to make sure you got there safely and didn't do anything stupid. Up here(haggisland) they are seirously talking about lowering the limit to zero. around christmaa, when the police are set hugh targets for driving convictions how many people could potentially lose their licence because they were out the night before and pulled over for a random check. The current system is BS.

Agreed, the vast majority who crash or kill are always something like 10 times over the limit. The current law is just about criminalising decent people who like to have a small drink or two with a meal at a nice country pub. Clearly these pubs will be places of the past before too long as with any remnants of civilisation as we know it.

My dad was a drink driver, he crashed his car on a bridge and nearly fell into the train tracks.

Another drink driver I know smashed into several cars.

I do not recommend this. Perhaps raising the alcohol limit very slightly to allow two pints but even that is risking it if one hasn't eaten beforehand.

I recruited someone to my company and took everyone out for a curry to welcome her. She only had a couple of drinks over an evening and meal. There was a police road block on her route home and she was stopped and found to be marginally over the limit. She lost her license and had to leave the job. She then lost her house and had to sell the car. Forced to relocate to somewhere she could exist without a car and was unable to find a new job and got into debt. She became very depressed and was prescribed medications. She then look her own life. All with 2 years. She didn't hurt anyone and was not "drunk" by any reasonable definition.

I don't recommend it either.

Not happening.

The "politician" who put this forward is a guy called Danny Healy-Rae.
He comes from a family of politicians who are... well, looked at with smirking tolerance by most.

The whole family are like a caricature, like some broge cartoon irish politcians.

He never expected this to fly either but it makes him look good to all the farmers down there who vote for him.

Just for reference... here's the big daddy of the family.

...and you yanks think your politicians are fucked up lol.

Yeah it's true... We'd drink your ass under the table.
Then we'd beat the shit out of you, buy you a beer and drive you home for a feed of potatoes.

We're a force of nature son.

This needs to be addressed in the US.. I'm more worried about shitty drivers in general.. than I am about good drivers who drink.. There should be a proficiency test so we can get licensed to drive even if we have been drinking.. I know for a fact that some people drive better drunk than some people drive sober.. It's about skill, dexterity, accuracy, experience and maturity.. not if I've had 2 beers!
