I thought it was odd when our insurance company was asking if we had guns or jewelry (gold) that we wanted to insure.... They were asking quite a few questions that seemed scripted. We had to call several times in 2011 when there were multiple tornadoes etc.....
Has anyone else experienced this?

Home owners insurance does not cover much in person property losses.
Guns, jewelry, coin collections and other valuables have to be insured separately, to insure you are covered for the full value of the loss.

"Now, with all this gun control legislation (in Illinois), I'm angry for many reasons," she said. "Why are they asking about guns in the hospital? Are they mandated by Obamacare to do so? Can they ask a minor about guns without a parent in the room? I'm really upset."

Advocate spokesman Mike Maggio told us he couldn't discuss this case for privacy reasons, but that gun questions are "not part of our protocol. It is not routine in any way. And it's not a standard practice."

Later Tuesday, Insley said she received a telephone call from Dr. Mark Butterly, head of the hospital's pediatric residency program. She said Butterly told her that it is indeed standard practice.

John Kass
January 23, 2013

In pro-gun-regulation Illinois — where politicians would rather play gun control politics than fight the murderous street gangs — a young man was admitted to the hospital.

Sam Insley, 16, of Oak Lawn, wasn't admitted with a gun problem.

Sam had a tonsil problem.

John Kass

.

"It was an infected tonsil," Mary Rita Insley told me of her son Sam, a strapping, 6-foot-2-inch, 195-pound lacrosse player at St. Rita High School on the Southwest Side.

"Yes, he's a big kid, but regardless of his age and stature, my husband and I were with him the entire time he was there."

Sam was admitted to Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn on Jan 4. A resident and two medical students began jotting down notes for a routine medical history. At one point, Mrs. Insley said, they asked her to step out of the room.

"I felt uneasy, but I stepped out so my son wouldn't be embarrassed," she told me, saying she figured they would ask drug and alcohol questions. Sam doesn't take drugs or alcohol, she said.

Later that day, Sam told her what the doctors had asked him.

"By the way, Mom," she recalled him saying, "when you were out of the room they asked me if we had any guns in the house."

Guns?

"Yes, it was none of their business," she said. "Where do they get off? I was furious.

Parents, never leave your children alone with the "professionals".

When they go to school, put an audio bug in his or her pocket.

One of these days, you are going to need evidence.

This happening in CA too. What purpose does this serve? How is it advancing the socialist agenda to have doctors ask these questions?

Don't tell me it's a public health issue, if that was the case they'd be asking us if we had ladders in our homes. (Removing TNB activity from the crime stats, face the fact that you are faaaaar more likely to die from a fall than a GSW...)

Fact: of the 11,000 gun deaths in USA, over 75% are perpetrated by :african:

So, for the sake of comparing actual CRIME :african: on :african: doesn't count as that's not real crime and it doesn't affect productive humans ( save for the costs associated with cleaning up the mess)

They have to ask if you have valuable metals, because a standard home owner policy only covers so much. They do have a script and they are required to ask open ended questions like that. If you said yes, they will ask how much, and then if you have more than is automatically covered, they are supposed to either offer you addition coverage or advise you that the additional amount isn't covered.

I don't know why they would ask about guns, except that some companies might consider them a liability issue, or maybe have specific limits on how much coverage they offer for firearms.

I would just say that I don't have any metals, because they are not going to burn up, and just make sure you put them where a burglar can't find them.

As for the firearms question, I would ask them why they want to know, in a calm and non-accusatory manner. The bottom line is that your insurance agent does not really care, they are just required to ask certain things.peace

The Obama admin and the extreme lefties in any position of power are going to use the kids. As an excuse to protect them for one, and as a reason to find out every private aspect of your household that is none of their damn business.
"Accept now that all you have seen from the day of your birth on the surface of the earth, to the present, are wonderful only because the finite mind of man is confused with fragments of evidence, that, from whatever direction we meet them, spring from an unreachable infinity."

The doctor is required by Obama-care to ask the question. They are not requred to get an answer. There is a clause that forbids them to record the answer, but they don't mention that to the doctors. Most doctors write the answer in the electronic records and from there it is acessable by BIG BROTHER. All the doctor has to record is that the question was asked.

My oldest is 9 and every pediatrition I have taken my children to have asked that question. I asked once why they asked me that and the nurse said they want to make sure the firearms are kept away from young children and if needed there is a program that offers free gun locks.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1260000

I can't vouch for USAA, but usually the underwriters are the ones who write the script. They have to assess the risk to the company and usually have statistical or legal reasons for the questions.

For instance the agent may have to ask if you have a dog, and then ask what breed and if it has ever bitten anyone. The agent is just praying that it's not a pit bull and you answer no on the last one. They aren't supposed to ask, "Do you have a pit bull?" because it's a leading question.

But you can ask them why they want to know certain things.
