Re: 7 Ways to Purify Water
I live near the ocean and am intrigued by the desalinator option in the article above. Do any of you have one? Is it practical? It seems like one could have a never ending supply of water that way as long as the ocean wasn't contaminated by something.

Re: 7 Ways to Purify Water
It only Produces one ounce of drinking water in two minutes-- two pints per hour and is 2 grand..

It might work ok but that is a ton of pumping for very little water. I would buy a few 55 gallon drums and fill them with water now. You could have a years supply of drinking water for only a few hundred bucks and then spend the rest of that money on food.

It doesn't seem practical.

I see what you mean. I guess if you have money to burn it would be a nice backup system. Somehow the idea of storing water in drums freaks me out. I imagine stale, stagnant water. How do you keep it fresh? Do you boil it after it has been sitting there for a year?

I swap out all my water once a year. I have a well so its free except for the electricity used to pump it out of the ground. I add a few drops of chlorine to the drums and they stay fine.

here is a thread i made yesterday with a ton of water storage ideas..

Thread: You can only survive 3 days without it , Start storing water, NOW!!!

Cool, I will check out the other thread.

We are thinking of buying a property with a well. I guess we would need to buy a hand crank for it in case of power outage so we would still be able to pump water. Is it hard to hand crank it? As a non musclebound woman, could I do it myself if my husband wasn't around?

The answer is in that thread. You can make a device called a well bucket for a few bucks out of pvc. in an emergency you just send it down the well on some rope and bring it back up full of water.. there is videos and instruction on how to make it in that thread i made.

A well is just a hole in the ground, Inside that hole most modern wells have a electronic water pump placed at the bottom of the well. There is also hose attached to send the water up and into your house, and electrical wires to run the pump. Most pumps run on 240 with a large current draw and will become useless with out power from the street or a large generator that can handle 240. and then you need gas to run the generator for ever.

You're also looking at a pretty fair battery bank ( probably 400amp/hrs or better ) , and something in the neighborhood of 1200-1500watts of panels If you want to run it off solar. You're gonna have $15,000 ( or more ) tied up in this water pumping backup system..

Or you could just take my advice and buy 10 bucks in parts from home depo and solve all these issues, but what do i know..

You can use regular household bleach. The ratio is 4 drops of bleach for every quart of water. Mix it and don't forget to get the cap and the threads of the bottle's mouth. Wait 30 minutes and drink.

How about a Water Well.

Water Wells are always clean. The Purification happens from the earth. The rock and soil filters the water.

The only problem is getting to the water down in the Well.
