i know it's popular these days, but i don't understand why adults like to play video games so much.

The biggest medium at the moment is electronic so that's why video games are the popular format, but since the dawn of civilisation all humans, from kids to adults, rich or poor, from kings to peasants to slaves have always played games of some sort. You may not play "video games", but I bet you play games of some sort.
