8 years to a kid for that?
police "worked hard" to catch this kid?
someone needs to help this kid, AND at the same time put that cop and judge in for his sentence, then 1 year for every life they have wrecked.

this whole thing is so fucked up i want to doubt that it is real.

THAT IS NOT JUSTICE

$7000 of damage, and 8 years back to back no parole.

people get away with crazier shit than that everyday.

poor kid

I'm a law and order guy but this is bullshit. The sentence is way out of line. Do Texas taxpayers know how much it'll cost to keep this kid locked up for 8 fucking years? For tagging?!Are judges elected in Texas? She looks to me like she's grandstanding. I'd be shocked if an appeal didn't lower the sentence.

6 months in county, with any time served, restitution [he probably has no $] and probation. That's would be an appropriate sentence

Not. I know for a fact that the castle doctrine in texas allows you to kill someone to prevent them from further destroying your property...

Yep, Texas is down on pot.

Someone mentioned prison system slaves, this is true. They have to keep those beds full and from what I can gather, they prefer non-violent offenders to do the work. That's why every day there are more and more laws for the people to follow.

American justice. Kill someone drunk driving and you'll get an easier sentence. Poor bastard couldn't buy his way out like rich people do.

Marijuana possession...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31557420

That explains it...

[link to www.huffingtonpost.com]

Americans are shifting on marijuana. More than half of them think it should be regulated like alcohol and cigarettes, 18 states have passed legislation approving it for medical use and Washington State and Colorado have legalized it for recreational use, but it remains illegal under federal law. And the arrests continue — one every 42 seconds, and 86 percent of those are simply for possession, according to the Marijuana Policy Project.

In 2011, marijuana possession arrests totaled 663,032 — more than arrests for all violent crimes combined. Possession arrests have nearly doubled since 1980, according to an FBI report

google '8 years in prison', and you'll get a lot of hits. Compare the offenses listed to what this kid did.

Child porn

drug trafficking

armed robbery

multi-million dollar embezzlement

We can now add tagging and marijuana possession.

Here in St Louis we have a tagger who calls himself "rat fag"

over the last two years he's spray painted businesses , homes, cars and billboards

This guys not an artist , it looks like something an 8 year old would do.

But its all over the place.

When you have " Rat Fag " crudely sprayed in 6 foot tall letters across the front of your store , you have to pay someone to get rid of it.

I was talking to an insurance adjuster who's estimating that the guy has done over a half million in damages so far

So yeah, I would have no problem putting his ignorant ass in jail for a 8 years.

His sentence was reduced to two years due to a change in Texas state law that now outlaws stacking sentences.

Re: Graffiti tagger receives 8 years in prison with no possibility of parole!
And btw...

If this young man had been from a fairly wealthy family, he would have been given the right to make a phone call.

He would have called a parent who, if he or she wasn't an asshole, would have told him not to say anything to the police (every non-asshole knows that). The parent would then call the family attorney who would have notified the police that the defendant was being represented by counsel.

He or she would have then contacted a criminal attorney who would have taken it from there.

The basic scenario as to what happened was that the perp was arrested on or near the scene of the crime, and then "brought upstairs" to be interrogated by a "nice guy" detective (good cop), then interrogated by a detective who would scare him to death (bad cop).

Alternately, these two police-man/woman would work together to get the perp to admit to EVERYTHING (including things that he might have made up).

The bottom line was that the police only had evidence for the initial crime. But by telling the perp that the judge would be much more lenient if he confessed to everything, he would get a lesser sentence. NO cop in this country would ever believe that!

So in the end, the "district court" (misdemeanors only)tried the defendant for the crime he was caught committing, AND ALSO for the seven crimes he confessed to BECAUSE THE POLICE SAID THE JUDGE "WOULD GO EASY ON HIM" IF HE CONFESSED TO!!!!!!!!

Much to the defendant's dismay, the judge buried him alive by finding him guilty for all the misdemeanors HE ADMITTED TO ... AND THEN sentenced him to CONSECUTIVE TERMS in the county jail!

What is even far worse is that these jails are not designed to hold prisoners for more than a year. Sentences of more than a year are served in prisons.

The basic point here is that the police and the judge showed absolutely no mercy for the defendant (which in these days is not unusual). Or if you prefer, they sentenced him to the stake (if you happen to know what that means).

I could see maybe 3 or 4 years sentenced plus community service in there somewhere but omg 8?

And no parole?

Yeah definately something wrong here.

Yes it's still bad to graffiti buildings but 8 years and no possibility of parole is a bit much for it. While there's people get off less for abusing and killing their pets. There's others who probably done enough wrong to warrant that but yet get off for less.
