It's incredible the rapid decline of this once stable and well functioning town. is that a joke? 20 years ago the city got sued and had to sell city hall to the plaintiff...or some crazy thing. when exactly was that place 'stable and well functioning'? you must be very old. |

East St. Louis was named an All-America City in 1959, having retained prosperity through the decade as its population reached a peak of 82,295 residents. In 1950 it was the fourth largest city in Illinois. Street gangs appeared in city neighborhoods. Like other cities with endemic problems by the 1960s, East St. Louis suffered race riots by blacks in the latter part of the decade. In September 1967, rioting occurred in the city's South End. The following summer, some sniping attacks occurred. The violence added to residential mistrust and adversely affected the downtown retail base and the city's income. That's less than one decade. I never said it went in decline recently. Try comprehending what you read sometimes. |

Not everyone from East St. Louis acts in this manner. And to call it a jungle or zoo is like call each and every person there animals and they are not. Although this is distasteful for them to act in this manner, East St. Louis is not this horrible place... it has its problems just like any other city with poverty and criminal activity. Do something better with your life than exploit the bad things about this city! No one ever talks about the innovators, successful business owners, athletes, and positive history of this City! Get a life! |
