I would feel safer amongst wild animals than in E ST Louis. Seriously.

It's incredible the rapid decline of this once stable and well functioning town.

is that a joke? 20 years ago the city got sued and had to sell city hall to the plaintiff...or some crazy thing.

when exactly was that place 'stable and well functioning'?

you must be very old.

East St. Louis was named an All-America City in 1959, having retained prosperity through the decade as its population reached a peak of 82,295 residents. In 1950 it was the fourth largest city in Illinois.

Street gangs appeared in city neighborhoods. Like other cities with endemic problems by the 1960s, East St. Louis suffered race riots by blacks in the latter part of the decade. In September 1967, rioting occurred in the city's South End. The following summer, some sniping attacks occurred. The violence added to residential mistrust and adversely affected the downtown retail base and the city's income.

That's less than one decade. I never said it went in decline recently. Try comprehending what you read sometimes.

we're the same age, but i lived in southern illinois in the 80s and a fight at the public aid office in east saint louis is a bit below par for what i've come to expect from the place.

its hilarious to me, personally...whoever wrote the article should have found a way to work Kentucky Fried Chicken into the story...

they've got good high school football and not much else.

This is utterly disrespectful for you to talk about people in this manner on a site titled Godlike. Not everyone from East St. Louis acts in this manner. And to call it a jungle or zoo is like call each and every person there animals and they are not. Although this is distasteful for them to act in this manner, East St. Louis is not this horrible place... it has its problems just like any other city with poverty and criminal activity. Do something better with your life than exploit the bad things about this city! No one ever talks about the innovators, successful business owners, athletes, and positive history of this City! Get a life!

Where there is poverty and criminal activity it will be predominately black...where there is successful businesses you will find whites getting robbed by blacks...fights always break out when you herd a bunch of blacks together, it's the law of the jungle.

East st louis is BAD. i refuse to go there. A lot of my friends always wanna go there but i refuse to go. My uncle was murdered there for his stereo system. And the major case squad knew who did it but apparently the witnesses weren't credible. They worked.on his case a whole 6 days..and my family and i did more work than they did...they are worthless. And what sucks is...the east side is in IL....but their.crime.rates get included w stl mo crime rates so stl looks even worse...not sayin that stl is safe...its got pretty heavy gang activity...like the horseshoe gang....but the east side is horrible.
