Re: Why is ANYONE using Windows STILL?
In another thread, someone mentioned a website that was listed by an anti-virus company as being a possible malware site.

I understand that most people are cost conscious and purchase PC's for various reasons. However, given Windows LONG history of being a virus magnet and extremely shitty reliability, WTF?

Is it too hard for most people to shitcan MS and simply install a different OS?

I can see needing to run it for "special" software, but for the love of all things holy, you CAN do almost everything one needs to do WITHOUT Windows. Even better, most are FREE and are not affected (yes, exceptions are out there) malware.

Just throwing this out for general discussion. Personally, I've bought many PC's and laptops that came with Windows... primarily because it's hard to buy one that doesn't come with it installed.

Why not just install another OS (Linux) and be done with it. What you'll end up with is a PC that actually does what it's supposed to.

What gives? Too hard to deal with? Love of Windows runneth too deeply?

Peace.

I have been looking to get into Linux.

I have a small netbook, a Lenovo laptop with a piddly Intel Atom processor. Slow as blazes and runs Windows XP SP3.

This slow little ladybug of a computer, would it be suitable for putting Linux on? Would it make the machine usable and worthwhile again? I never use it anymore.

I use Windows just because i am used to it. Yes, there are many holes in it, but if you know how to use it and have a descent firewall and anti-virus nothing will happen. Just stay out of fishy websites and use common sense you can surf without a worry.

And since i like to play games i feel Windows is the best for it right now. But if i wanted to surf really safe, f.ex if i had a job with many trade secrets etc i would some Linux OS like Ubuntu.

Yes, try Lubuntu.
It works fine on my netbook.

Do I need to partition or will just installing Lubuntu from Windows environment do everything for me?
Thanks

The Windows family of OS have a 92% market share for desktop OS. With that kind of market share, software developers and hardware manufacturer are going to develop for it.

Games, hardware, software, basically everything is developed for Windows, and then Mac in a second place.

So I think for most people, it's not even in their thought process. Windows works, it's familiar, and there is software available for it.

I've used just about every OS there has been, with multiple laptops and dual boots, but I have found it is limiting not having Windows around.

Yes, you CAN make due, with let's say Ubuntu, but there are going to be things that it sucks at or the free software you mention is total crap.

HTML 5 was supposed to be the savior for native application development, but it's not taking off where some had predicted. People LIKE native applications, and trying to run an application under essentially a browser or browser component on any platform, although a great concept (Java anyone?) it's not adopting as fast as some might have expected.

Not sure what to think about Microsoft anymore--they excel in server OS, development/.NET, server applications (SharePoint, SQL Server, Project, Exchange), but with Windows 8, they are back in the world of a Vista fiasco, and in the light speed changes and incredible openness and talent that exists, others will not hesitate to step in at the right moment with new innovation.

You bring up some good points. There is something to the idea of vendor lock in or ecosystems. It's a way companies (Apple comes to mind) get you to STAY with their hardware/software. It's a really great idea for the company, because it allows them (in theory) to develop hardware and software that works seamlessly.

This is good for the consumer (in theory), because they get the PROMISE of tight integration between peripherals and an easy, hassle free experience. Apple does this VERY well. Samsung comes to mind as a close 2nd. Everyone else... not so much.

Why is this? Because there exists a world of technology innovations and STANDARDS (www comes to mind) whereby EVERYONE can play nicely together. The problem is that some companies don't like STANDARDS. Why? I can only guess is that they can't get paid for having invented it since it's a established STANDARD. So, instead, they try to build their own bullshit (Zune comes to mind).

What does this have to do with Windows? Microsoft is the KING OF THE WORLD at saying "fuck you" to open standards. If they didn't make it or buy it, they don't play at all.
Apple is not much better. They only play with others, when it suits them (www comes to mind again). They HAD to build browsers, thus kicking off the browser wars. What's one of the best browsers in the world? Firefox. Why? IMO, it's FREE.

The real problem in all this OS mess is that we've got too many BIG companies trying to control us all. Think about it. Right now, I can think of Oracle, Apple, Google, and Microsoft as companies all vying for YOU. They don't just want your money, they want your soul. All of your data. EVERYTHING.

Complete and total fucking control.

So, given this point of view, I will assert that the anti-virus bullshit is nothing more than more of the SAME. These companies and Microsoft are vampires, just looking to suck your blood. Think about it? Could Microsoft have ended this virus shit a long time ago? Yes. I can point to MANY other OS's that simply do not have that problem.

IMO, it's a complete SLAVE system. These companies are quite possibly colluding with each other. Make the virus, fix the virus, repeat and rinse. Get out. Get out while you still can. Free yourself from the bondage. Get out of the game. Believe it or not, you CAN live quite comfortably if you use OPEN STANDARDS devices and OS's.

What is this you say? There are MANY open standards out there. For example, DLNA? This is a standard for Multimedia Content Delivery. This is what a PS3 uses to play your music over the network. Works quite well. Reason? Microsoft, Apple, and whoever didn't get their meathooks on it before it got popular.

Because of this, there are MANY devices made by MANY companies that can use DLNA in very cool ways. Stream music/videos/files between devices. Send a song on an Android phone to your Samsung TV.

The same goes with Operating Systems. You have proprietary (not STANDARD) OS's like Windows. And you have the STANDARDs based OS's like yes, Linux, but also BSD, Mac OS X, Android (sorta) and many others.

So, if you buy a word I just said, think about what you are doing. Think about what you are using, what you're supporting, and why. Think about who you WANT to OWN YOU.

I can't do it. I choose to be free. It's not hard to do and it's actually quite pleasant once you get used to it. You have to dig around on the internet sometimes to find help or information on whatever you might need, but it's available in abundance.

The world of open computing STANDARDS is about all that's left of the tech companies enslaving us all. For real. IF this idea hasn't occured to you before, you just haven't thought about it long enough.

By using Linux, and any other OPEN STANDARDS BASED systems are voting with your wallet, bondy, mind, and soul.

Free yourself.

Funny you should ask! I am posting this on an HP Mini 1000 netbook with very similar specifications running Ubuntu 12.10. It was like getting a whole new computer. I was pleasantly surprised how well and fast it works. Much faster than the Windows XP that it came with.

Re: Why is ANYONE using Windows STILL?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Windows in present times. I've used Windows OS since 3.1. The best Windows in my experience is 7 and XP would come second although it had some problems. Using Windows 7, it has NEVER failed me. I don't know why people bash Windows just for the heck of it.

I will say that Windows 8 is not a good step forward since I'm not really a fan of touch screens, but I'm sure the next version would be improved for desktop users.

Linux is not a suitable operating system for home users. You have to do a bunch of things for simple operations. It is designed by and for geeks. If you have time to play around and experiment, it's fine.

Re: Why is ANYONE using Windows STILL?
My father-in-law started using a computer around 10 years ago. Always used a Windows machine; never had a problem.

So this guy from his church talks him into buying one with Ubuntu on it and ever since then I have to go over to his house to "fix" it, about once or twice a month, because I build and fix computers as a hobby.

Everything was great until he started running Linux, and they are an absolute bitch to work on. It takes me literally hours of research sometimes, because it's virtually impossible to diagnose and fix a problem.

So two weeks ago I said 'screw it!' and I wiped the drive and tried to install Puppy linux. It refused to install, so I went back to Ubuntu, downloaded the latest version, only to find out it doesn't fit on a CD anymore!

Finally got it re-installed, and today I find out it's not working again.

That pretty much sums up my experience with Linux... one problem after another. I tried to install it on one of my older PCs and couldn't connect to the internet.

I even put Linux on this laptop, (before I knew better) but I made the mistake of using the same folder to keep all my personal files as Win7, and damn if it didn't kill EVERY DAMN PERSONAL FILE on this computer!!!

So-o, that's why I use Windows.rockon

Re: Why is ANYONE using Windows STILL?
I mostly run windows because

1) it's not MacOS
2) Games
3) A lot of programs I need to learn to use for engineering and college don't run on Linux.

Even if windows Linux is a lot less likely to get a virus, that's mostly because hardly anyone uses it and those that do know how to deal with viruses so nobody bothers making them. The reason MacOS doesn't have any is because it's closed software so nobody can make any viruses for it. If everyone went over to another open software OS like Linux then you'd start seeing more and more viruses for that OS.

Anyway if you're smart enough it's pretty easy to avoid viruses on windows so it only becomes a minor nuisance.
